I've only recently started loading for .270, and I was surprised to get 3230 and 3220 velocities. Accuracy was better than 3/4 with 60 grains of H4831sc, hornady cases, fed GM210, mrx 130s and 26 inch barrel. I had some slight ridges on the edges of the primer dent but it didnt seem excessive. I only fired a couple of rounds to cause as always I was in a rush. It just seems fast to me as I'm trying to break 3200 with my buddies .270wsm using a 130 barnes tipped magnum win primers and imr7828 max loads from nosler book. It should be over 3300 or so but only gets about 3100 with his 25 inch sako A7. I know its plenty fast, but you know.. Is there a better powder I should use for the 270wsm?

I had a 25" Lilja tube on my 270 and with R22 and 130's or 135's I was in the 3300 range, spect with R17 I'd get the same.

My last 270 tube was a 23" Lilja and with R17,R22 and H4350 and 130's it'd run right in the 3200 range. So I think that your speeds are right in there.

A long barreled 270 is incredibly underrated!

Give RL17 a try in the wsm I think you will pick up some speed from it.

When I finally got a 24" barreled .270Win I started getting 3240+ with handloads and cheap Federal Power Shok.

My 24" barreled .270WSM rarely got over 3300 and most loads went 3250 or so. Sold it, don't like any WSM because they don't work with neck sizing in my experience.

You don't get much better than H4381sc in the .270Win but I've liked MagPro, RL19 and 22, and have just started working with RL17.

I shoot a 26" barreled 270 Win. and with full on loads it shows 3200 with 130 grain bullets. This is from an old Ruger 1B.

Both JOC and Ken Waters found 100+ fps when going from 22" to 24"

Makes me want to try a 26" .270Win.

I was running H4831 in my 270win and getting 2975fps with 140grain AB switched to RL17 last year and now velocities with the same bullet are 3100fps. I think you will like it in the 270win

Tad more than 3200 fps with RL-22 and Hornady 130 Spire Points in a 24" Model 70.

In a couple of 22" Model 700's I can run right at factory listed velocity, maybe 3060-3080 fps, with a book max of H-4831 (the long cut variety).

RL-22 gave me the best velocity and best accuracy in my .270's and a .300 WM for the first 8 pound jug. But I had an unsettling experience with the second jug. The exact same charge I'd been using gave over 3300 fps in the 24" 270 and I forget the velocity in the .300 but it had the same effect which told me pressure was beyond reasonable.

My notes for the second jug always indicate xx grains "fast" RL-22.

But the brass is more expensive, doesn't feed as well, factory ammo is more expensive, less available, harder to reload.......what's not to like about the WSM?

In a Pre-64 Model 70 with a 24" barrel and using W-W cases, F215 primers, 55 grains of IMR 4350, and the 130-grain Partition, I get 3,013 fps.
A friend of mine is a Pre-64 Model 70 nut and a .270 nut and he uses that load for everything, including elk. He told me he has tried about 20 different loads in the .270 WCF and he keeps coming back to it.

I have a 1949 Model 70 that I use the same load of 55 grains IMR 4350 with a standard large rifle primer, and they chronographed at just over 3100. I also use the Combined Technologies bullet and have gotten great results on deer and antelope.

With 3 different 270's currently, I get 3150-3180 with 22" barrels & 3220-3240 from a 24" barrel.

Either RL-22 or Norma MRP is what I'm using now, but I'm testing RL-17, Win 780 & IMR-7828SSC now.

My 270 (Rem 700 mtn rifle) with a 22" barrel gets a hair over 3100 with RL19 and 130 Nosler Solid base bullets. I don't know the charge off the top of my head.

I have had no trouble getting 3100-3200 fps with 24" barrel and 3050-3100 fps with 22" barrel.

Not true - just have to use a neck sizing die, NOT a FL die!!!

What a sad thing to happen to a deer heart. Have you no shame? Pickled Deer Heart is one of life's great treat's. As for the 270 I would get 3170 fps out of my old Super Grade. Had a 24 inch barrel on it. 57.5 gr of IMR-4831 and 130 gr Speer SP's shot a lot of deer with that load over the years.

I do just fine with the 270wsm and a neck die.
