John ;

for a minute there I thinking to myself -Man this section is really dead ...But at least I know where all the greenheads went to -Miss/Louis - Thats a awesome Picture and good limit..I say limit becuz I dont know who shot what .I came over here from the Du board..With 18,000 post I finally got my feel of Du and the way of thinking of some of the members .I really did not like how the Don Young part was handled nor the Cap & Trade isssue .

Thanks for a reply - you can pretty much see all of my 2009 pictures on my website ..

No dogs ??

We are dogless at the moment. My son has one in school so hopefully next year we will be in better shape.

I dropped out of DU and joined Delta Waterfowl. Tired of my money going to Arkansas to build holes that cut us off down here.

I think you and I are about the only ones around this forum???

rodngun thats funny that you say that about texas duck hunting id always figured that the ducks are flocked up and it would good shooten untill the end of the season .. and in north dakota and im sure in manitoba if you hit it right more like 5,000 and more greenies in the sky at a time, the sky does turn black as the saying goes... if you love to duck hunt you have to experince at least once its pretty cool to see...

I would like to see that..but my area is bettwen the coastline(great area ) for 1,00o upon 1,000 and alot of divers. The other problem is I am to far the otherside of the flyway..but close enuff to pick up a variety of birds -just not any one in large numbers..the area I am in is also...the middle of North /South of the state, they have plenty of room to stay idle just north of me or continue on to South Texas - which is what most do.

I hunt em wether they come in by the 1,000 or by pairs or singles..I can stay on the water all day and kill one bird -and have a great day..but thats just me.

Glad there are a few more of us around. grin

Heck, I chased ducks - I just didn't SHOOT any! The little buggers are too dang quick to fly away for me! Geese seem a little slower. maybe fewer predators tackle them? Every time I tried to sneak up on ducks they just flew away.....

I hope to ambush them from a blind this coming season, but I'm new at this so if you guys have any tips - I'd love to hear them!

I have right at 43 years under my belt just on Ducks ..my way is not always the right way and I do stuff other people will not do or agree with.
________________________________________________________________
For example - No Robo here. **Just to much damage to Juvi birds.
No 3 1/2 inch shells.. **just promotes skybusting.
_________________________________________________________________

That dont mean I'm right -just how was brought up, old school style.I can argue and stir the pot with the best of em on Duck Hunting.

Then again I run a airboat - and catch plenty of grief behind that as it is.Mainly becuz people dont realize that airboats were being used to duck hunt way back in the day prior to all this new wave crap going on..

With all that being said - feel free to ask away on tips etc etc.

**Edit : I shot a Rem 870 for 43 years straight - I have as of this year switched over to a 11-87..bad shoulder - long story..LOL

You should have seen the funny crap going on this season..Nothing like Two Green Wings coming in fast and hard - drop one and then try to pull the forearm stock off of the gun b4 you realize what your doing..Second bird flew south -rather quickly I might add.LOL

Here are a few pics from some of my hunts. It was a fun year.
I was to be leaving in the morning for South Dakota to chase the snow geese BUT they have blown through and majority has moved on.

Heck,

I have shot 2 3/4 #4's for as long as I can remember. I use an old Browning A5 Light 12 on 'em as well.

If you will hunt where the duck want to go, long shots aren't necessary. I know that isn't always possible.

Alot of this magnumitis, leads to lost birds and cripples.

+10 JM

I shot 2 3/4 shells all the way until they went to the steel crap...didnt take long to figure out that 3 inch was needed for steel.Depending on the area 2 3/4 still works over decoys in a controled situation..but when your on public water and barney & friends are out there skybusting everything in sight and the birds are skittish- Pass shooting comes into play real quick..

My Fav all time (Peters : Paper hull,#4 )Bang = Dead bird.Cant say that about steel!!

In spite of my last post, I must confess to using a 3.5 12 ga. for the Geese... blush

rodngun,
We had just a bumper crop of woodies last couple years. I have found a little honey hole to hunt on.
The past year was pretty good had to make a lot of sausage and hot sticks with all the white geese but the green heads made for some fine table fair.
I will try to keep some in the air this year so they get a chance to make a visit to you.

Here's a couple from last fall.
First hunt for my son and I!
[Linked Image]
second morning's hunt
1100 2 3/4" for my buddy, 2 3/4" and some 3" for my son's express, and I was using 3" Kent Fasteel in my 20 O/U.

The headless teal BTW, came in fast and flared at about 10 feet when I shot him , I doubt if the shot was completely away from the wad!

Most probably won't recognize this guy, but he painted the 2009 federal duck stamp we all had in our wallets. Great guy. Interestingly enough, despite his winning the stamp contest, he'd never shot one. We changed that when he and Ivan came hunting with me. wink

JM: let me clarify my comment on the 3 1/2 inch shells....I dont mind people using them on Geese and Turkey - hell, I do..what I meant by my comment was ..I dont like them in a duck blind,,2 3/4 fine ,depend on time of season..3 inch ..fine ....But the menatlity as of late BIGGGER SHELL as in 3 1/2 - the better chance they think they have at killin something..not true in a duck blind ...JMO..to me it just promotes skybusting !!

skybusting,,, minnesota is home of it and i hate it a couple of spots here are horrible dont even go there anymore.... i use 3 inch for duck and 3 1/2 for geese... i think people watch them hunten shows and think i can do that.. ive seen people get into fist fights back at the landing cause of skybusting...

ThankYa. Not our trailer, belonged to an alleged guide service at same motel. Seems we had more LUCK.

Did make a photogenic backdrop. There's duck hunters, and then there's duck killers...

TTT, 'caint let it die...

92 degrees yesterday, record high. Reminiscing an outfitted layout from '08 season. Didn't have 4 G's in equipment for a one time gig. Dec 8th, 2 degrees, Lake Michigan.

Photo essay, on the making of Squaw Gumbo(otherwise known as the PC correct Long Tailed Stew).
Start with two parts water, one part ice.

Add one Part big boat, and two parts small boats.

Blend together after 2.5 miles out.

Fold in decoys, and let cool...
