This one is my favorite though. Old remington 700 22-250 with a leupold rifleman 3-9x50 scope Proverbs 12:27 The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

Shot one other one. Spent a few years in the Choteau area myself, used to farm up off the Conrad Cutoff on 16 Road. I'm sorta old school when it comes to coyote hunting. A couple of 1915 vintage Savage 1899s one in .22 High Power, the other, .250-3000. If you run into Fuzz Armstrong or Tim & Sherri at the Sinclair Station, tell them their old neighbor Matt says hey.

I know Tim and Sherri for sure. My dad used to plow snow for him in the winter. How close did you live to Pendroy? My grandpa has 700 acres right at the corner of the pendroy highway and the highway to browning. 1000s of gophers out there. Ear Mt is just to the right of the mtns in the picture. It was taken out on some property on the road to Pishkun. Here is Ear Mnt for ya. Killed this one the same morning as the one in my first pic. Called him into 10 yards before i shot it. I don't have any pictures and I am new to this predator game but I just picked up a Ruger Hawkeye in 6.5 creedmoor today to try on coyotes and deer. What do you all think? Do you hand load? rounds seem to be kinda scarce in my neck of the woods. I have a mueller on my 700 220 swift that I love, picked up used and cheap, thinking that even if I did not like it I would use it on a 22 or something. It works great, and you can't beat it for the price. If your not looking in the lower end scopes, I also rely heavily on nikon. Great scope but a bit more money.

Your 788 is one sweet rifle. I shot a few coyotes with a 788 tack driver in 22-250 that a friend owned, and have wish I had one ever since. My current predator getter is a plain Rem. Mowhawk 600 in .243. Photobucket let me post a photo of the carbine as I bought it but for some reason won't let me do another, but it looks much the same. The previous owner worked in a body shop and had coated the metal with the toughest undercoat he knew. It is slightly textured flat black, and I left it alone. The photo above is as I bought it, with a 3.5-10X50 Vivitar scope. I replaced it with a 2-7x32 Bushnell 3200 Firefly, with rings from Yukoner here at the 'Fire, gratis! A Rifle Basix trigger and a clear coat to seal worn spots on the wood finished it for me. I'm tickled with it for what I do. My last six critters with it have averaged 43 yards distant, with more under 20 than over 30 yards. I shot a bobcat at 16 steps recently through a golf ball sized hole in brush, which is what the rifle is set up to do with low mounted scope and sight-in to keep line of sight close to bore out to 100 yards. No reason that Creedmoor couldn't make a great varmint killer; though if your experience with that is similar to mine w/ the 257 Ackley, you'll be overgunned for pelt-keeping. If you handload there are great options for you, although I suspect the Hornady A-Max would do nicely. For glass I lean toward the Burris FFII. You can get 'em super cheap right now (particularly the 3-9x40mm version) and with their Ballistic Plex they're extremely practical in the field. Others have suggested Nikon and I wouldn't argue with that one, either.

I do handload but I don't have the dies for this one yet. Buutt I will soon. As for scopes, Ingwe you and I have some very similar interests, in particular the 7x57 and I like the Burris ff2. I kind of like the Nikon buckmaster 4.5x14 with side focus. One that is really pulling my trigger so to speak is the Zeiss 3-9x40 conquest. As you can see they go right up the ladder in price but I'm still undecided. I put a straight 4x Loopy on this morning just to look at it. Sweet looking rifle. Now should I bob the barrel to about 23" and put it in a synthetic stock? Justaa thinkin, I can't leavem alone. Thanks guys for the info, keep it coming. Hey I forgot to mention, I picked up 4 boxes of the factory loaded 120 grain Amax when I picked up the rifle. Since brass is in short supply I figured this would get me started. That looks like a pretty hefty bobcat, Okanagan. Nice photo. Hang on to that Mohawk 600. They're getting scarcer every day and their asking price just seems to keep climbing.

Well hey, I finally put a scope on the 6.5 creedmoor made it to the range today. I went with the Burris FF2 3-9x40 Bal Plex. I managed to bore sight and shoot 3 groups before it started raining. I got one 4 shot group of @ 5/8 inch. Not too bad for its maiden voyage with factory 120 grain AMax loads. The trigger is a little heavy, I guess I'll have to look into that but I haven't messed with one of the new ruger triggers. Anyway it shows a lot of promise. I may have to bed it and maybe put a better rubbed oil finish if I can figure out how to get the Ruger finish off. Any ideas? Thanks Les Its not always easy to do the right thing, But it is always the right thing to do.

Brush that stuff on nice and thick, wrap in aluminum foil and leave overnight. Scrape the finish off w/ a credit card the next day. I've done that w/ several factory-finished rifles and it works like a charm. Good luck!

That was up close to the headwaters of the Huerfano River down here in Southern CO, above treeline on Blanca Peak. Anywhere above treeline (mostly) is good for chucks although there are more regs now than there used to be--something like 2/day as a bag limit. That said I changed my mind this Ruger 10/22 was my first gun (after the daisy) and probably has 3k-4k rounds through it easy and at 50yds will still hit a rabbit between the ere and the eye. Has more confirmed kills than all my guns combined. Fitted with a Tasco 3-9 and has never missed a lick.

Rolling hills were obscuring my view laying prone next to the truck. 3ft up made a clean line of sight to target.

This one is the 4-12x40 and my initial impressions are that for the money it is very good. No parallax issues, clarity seems to be better than a VX-1 (sharper, crisper image), the adjustments are a little soft (they do not give a good solid click when adjusting) but they seem to be spot on, it is just necessary to pay attention or you can overrun a click. So far I am very satisfied with it for the dollar value. Now the bad news - previous to this one I purchased a Redfield 3-9x40 and it had significant parallax issues so I returned it and purchased this one. SSK/Contender frame and T/C 17 Mach2 bbl I bought as a close-out at CDNN. Scope is a fixed 10X El Paso Weaver K10 AO. Accurate beyond belief and it'll do all I need on Crows, Starlings, snapping turtles at the pond and ground hogs. An added comment not intended to elicit follow-on remarks - - however, I can't help but notice the numbers of Plain Jane rifles with Plain Jane scopes in the entries thus far. Shows-to-go-ya that a modest rifle and modest scope can perform right along with the glitzy rigs.

The 12 power magnification is a nice fit with the 222 cartridge. It is amazing what another 3 power does for ones confidence. I hope that one you get is as good as this one, I will be interested to see if mine is representative or I just got lucky. I have owned 3 of those in years past and wish that I had kept at least one of them. They are the handiest pick-up rifle ever and generally are very accurate. Howa 1500 in .204 Ruger w/Leupold Vari-X IIc 3-9, Ruger 77 Target in 22-250 w/Leupold VX II 6-18AO, RRA Coyote Rifle w/Leupold MK AR 6-18, and a RRA Coyote Carbine with a VX I 3-9. The old Ruger belonged to my dad and was a high school graduation present to me.

Central Indiana Here's some pics of my PD rifles. My newest Ruger #1, finished Feb,09 by Penrod Precision. Cal. is .204 Wasp, PTG reamer made to my specs, Krieger 11" twist, Kepplinger set trigger. Same rifle after 634 yd PD shot May,09. Was up 34 clicks on 6.5-20 Leupold from 200 yd zero with 40gr V-max at 4040fps fireforming load. Load for this May is 39 gr Blitzkings at 4100 fps. Another #1 by rebarreled by Penrod in 07. This is another wildcat of my design. It's a lengthened and improved .219 Wasp that I call .219 PDK (prairie dog killer). Shilen 14" twist, Kepplinger, 8.5-32 X 50 Pentax. 50 gr V-max at 3710 fps. Ruger #3 was a .22 K-Hornet, rebarreled by EABCO in 04 to .224 BRM. Has #1 wood, Kepplinger trigger, Vais brake, 6.5-20 X 40 Leupold. I've been shooting this #3 .219 Wasp since 94 and have finally worn out the Shilen barrel after 6000 shots. Two weeks ago I took it to Penrod along with a 11" twist Pac-Nor .20 cal. barrel and my .204 Wasp reamer. Hope to have it back by Fall for some load testing before Winter. .204 Wasp, .219 Wasp, .219 PDK, .224 BRM, 6.5 Bullberry Imp., .30 Herrett All are made from 30-30 brass except the .224 BRM which is made from .38-55 Win. brass. The last two are used in TC barrels for IHMSA competition. Dave

As to the porcupine. I had been at my taxidermist's shop about a week before I encountered this critter. He had a porcupine that he had just finished. I remarked to him that I really liked it and the next time I had an opportunity to take one I would. When I hunted in Rocksprings, Tx. we used to see them all the time. That was in 2000. I've hunted 3 other places since then and this is the first one I'd seen in 8 or 8 years. He was walking across the road when I spied him. By time I got stopped and got out of the truck he'd made it across the road and up into a tree. I had my Tarus snubbie in 44 special, loaded with hard cast lead bullets on my hip and nailed him with that. Hard to believe, hadn't seen one in years, saw one at the taxidermist shop and nailed this one a week later. His assistant is still cussin'me. Also, here are a few more of my varmint rigs.
