Long story short: 70 yds, cow was bedded down, shot her in the ear. Head jerked back, but otherwise never moved. IIRC, the bullet did not exit her head. 53 grain Barnes TSX, @ 3200 fps, can't remember the load (26.5 g IMR 3031?), CZ527 micro Mauser action chambered in .223 Remington, 22" barrel. I was coyote hunting with some friends that were deer hunting (already filled my deer tag), when we found a herd of elk. Being the opportunistic hunter that I am, I made due with what I had. Would not recommend the .223 as an elk hunting round in general though.

That has been my experience with TSX too.

well they didnt shoot worth a damn today. Might try a few with less powder or mess with the seating depth. It was shooting all over the place. might load up a few more of each one i just shot but clean my gun before i shoot it.Im not giving up on them yet.

The barnes book's max with 4895 was 36.5. I shot 5 shots each of 35.5, 36, and 36.5 grains of powder. The 36.5 was the best of them all but still about a 3 inch group. And my gun was very very fouled. I havent cleaned it in a long time. So that could have been a problem. I did find 3 of the bullets though laying on top of the dirt. All of them were still close to 1/4 or 1/2 of their weight. Impressed me since i would shooting into dirt and big rocks. Might try and play with the seating depths if have time tomorrow or saturday.
