I had a accumark 338-378 great rifle, I ran 250 gr partions at 3250 fps, that was before I caught on to the magic of the 300 gr bullets. That rifle shot 5 shots into 5/8 inch groups at 100 yrds with no custom work done to it. My Edge is running 300 gr matchkings at 2840 fps with H1000 and a OAL of 3.890. I just experimented with retumbo a couple weeks ago and it showed alot of hope. Had 2875 fps and the first 3 shots at 100 were same hole, 4th was only 1/8 out.The guy I got the rifle from said it would never put 10 shots in the same hole at 100 yards, I just laughed. But his standards are off the charts since his shooting partners are world record holders in the 1000 yrd Benchrest! I was very excited to shoot as good as I did!

Did you ever get good groups with the 338/378 with the 300 grain SMK? Did you try the 250SMK? I think the 338/378 twist at 1/10 is more suited to the 250 grain pills same as the older TRG42-that ran the same twist. The newer TRG42 runs a faster twist now to stabilize the long 300 SMK. Just picking your brain and others who know about this subject. Have a good day.

Hardly tried the 300 gr Matchkings then, I was sold on the 250 gr. Partion. Never tried the 250 SMK. If I was going to shoot 250 gr. now I think I would give the 250 gr accubonds a try.Curious as to what a 300 gr accubond would be like if they make one eventually.

My old 338-378 Roy would really shoot the 300gr SMK.
I used H1000 with Fed215GMs, don't remember the powder weight but I saw 2800 fps and 5 shot groups at 200 yards right around 1 inch.
That was the only bullet I ever got to shoot well from that rifle.

Good groups with the H1000 you say 340boy. I'll give it a go and see-thanks for the tip. I just checked in the Sierra Edition V -4th printing and they say max load for 300 grain SMK at 98-H1000 grains and max speed/load-2750 ft/sec. I was very impressed with this book and the accuracy of the tables on loads and related speeds.

378,
I bet you will like that combo.
The funny thing with my experience was that it would shoot better at 200, 300 yards than 100.
Never could quite figure that one out.
???

My 2800 fps load puts em mostly in the same hole...2800 fps is my accuaraly load, when Im shooting to 1 mile Im not after speed. My 15 yr old boy shot 1/2 moa group with this load a few months ago at 1,450 yards...Its a killer load

Isn't that strange how you can get 2800 fps with 90 grains of H1000 while the 338/378 weatherby gets 2750 fps with 98 grains of H1000. Using the same 300 grain bullet. ???

Gee I'd like to see that rig and some of your kids targets at 1450 yds at 1/2 moa. I have a hard time believing some of your comments.

378canuk,

Listen my friend...People with their own limitations tend to call bull crap on things they know nothing about. You know nothing about me, so be careful about you words. Frankly, Im surprised that a guy with a 378 is calling bull crap on a guy with a 338 edge. You of all people should know what your gun is capable of. Unless of course you're just one of those guys that shoots 3 rounds a year at 100 yards and calls it good. Which is perfectly fine with me, just don't call BS on guys that might be a bit more experienced than you.

Go get on a long range hunting site..like snipers hide.com or long range hunting.com...Do some reading and you will reaize, your words here are a bit out of line. Ask around about me and others on the sites,, and you will not be making the same statements you are making here.

I have 2 338 edges and am assembling a 375 snipe tac and just now pulling the parts for the new 375 Viersco Mag. These two latter guns are 2,500 yard guns. No offensse to others here, but 1,000 yards is joke to me and other guys in my shooting circle.

We stopped shooting 1,000 yards as common practice cause its a waste of ammo and frankly, it's just too easy. If you know how to call wind and are used to shooting in 10-12 mph mountain currents, whats not to believe. Again, your statement tells me you have probably never painted a steal target with your 378 at 1,400 yards or better.

Many in my circles have been to long range shooting schools (myself included) and we shoot ALL summer. Yep, ALL summer at targets from 1,000 yards to 2,000 yards. Do this and you will burn through a barrel in 3 summers....1,450 yards 1/2 minute groups are doable if you know what the hell you are doing.

So before you go call BS on someone here, perhaps you should invest $5,000 in a LR gun, buy a night force ballistics software program, get a kestrel weather station, a gps and good range finder, a hand held computer to run all your dope, go to a shooting school and go blow some rounds down range and find out for yourself.

And lastly, I tried for 20 minutes to down load fotos of the 1450 yard target and the 1600 yard target with (yea you guessed it 1/2 moa groups.) And yea, my 15 yr old boy shot most of the groups with me caling the wind. Sorry but its true, maybe a 15 yr old can out shoot even you.

This may make you even feel smaller, last summer while I was calling the wind at 1,000 yards, My 10 yr old, my girlfriends 10 yr old, my 13 yr old and 15 yr old all had first round hits on the target at 1,000 yards. wow,,whoaaa so unbelievable...NOT....Of course Dad was doping the wind. Does this all sound like BS?????? If so,,,you might wish to get to a Long range shooting school.

cheers,

If someone could hit a target at 1450 yard with a 378 or even a 338/378 I would be amazed. Now TARGET could be a 400 bbl upright tank or a 1 ft x 1ft plate-that wasn't specified. I've been shooting this 378 longer than you probably have been living. As matter of fact I'll bet I got shirts older than you. I was being polite by saying that I had a hard time to believe some of your comments. But that now pretty well cleared that up.
I find it strange that you can manage an avatar (tiger photo)but can't post any photos of targets or your many long range rifles. My long range targets are posted here and there on this forum and so is my long range rig and it isn't a Weatherby it's a Lapua IM custom built. I have 2 weatherbys and they don't come close to the accuracy of this rifle at long range. Apples and oranges.

378canuck....I forgot,,You're the dude who TOLD me that I my 338 edge was toooo slow at 2800 fps...Now it all makes sense,,You call bs on my 1,450 yard shooting and youre the same guys that says my edge should be shooting 3,000 fps.

It all makes sense, you don't believe my accuracy at 1,450 yards cause you dont know diddley squat about accuracy or long range shooting. If you did, you would never say rev up my speed. Accuracy is number one at long range. No body cares about speed if all things are equal.

My 338 edge, was the personal gun of Shawn Carlock, a very well known gunsmith here in Idaho and X-national long range champion shooter, X swat trainer, long range trainer and a guy who has a video of an elk he dumped last year at 1,300 yards on Utube... this guy has credintials.

He loaded this gun (my gun) to shoot 2800 fps and it shoots 1/4 moa groups. And you're telling me to rev it up to 3000 fps.

Who would you listen to ...a national champion shooter or you????? You don't believe I shot (my son) shot 1/2 moa groups at 1,450 yards cause you dont know squat about reloading for or shooting long range. And long range to me is just getting started at 1,000 yards.

When reloading for long range, who gives a rip about velocity like you so ignorantly suggestd I do with my 338 edge.

cheers,
zman

Again, your words are proof positive that you have your own limitations. You talk about your age as if that some how makes you a better shooter?

My teenage boys smaks the target at 1,450 then smaks it again at 1,600 yards, and you don't think you can hit it that far.

Since you can't hit it, nobody else can? There is no logic in your words my friend. No offense, but if you took your words to a long range site where my peers are, you would feel a bit embarrased.

1,450 is the easy part. Yea we might miss the first shot and we did, but if you can read the wind currents a 1,000 you can read them at 1,450 (if you know what you're doing).

My gunsmith (shawn carlock) teaches an advanced class that shoots to 1,600 yards, if this type of accuracy was not attainable, then why would he have a class????

The boys at Chey tac in Arco Idah have a class as well. Their range goes from 1,000 yards to 3,000 yards. Although most shoot to 2,000 and 2,500 yards.

Perhaps you should color outside the lines here a bit and take an Long Range shooting class and stop calling people liars. You might have to pony up a Grand, but you might learn something even at your age.

And yes, you're still offensive when you're saying that I can put my tiger on there but not a foto. The tiger took about one second to link and I told you before I tried for a half hour one day to post several fotos of the 1,450 and the 1,600 yard target, but the site kept telling me my foto was too large. After cropping the foto down to the size of an ant, it still said (file too large).

Besides, anyone can take a target to say 100 yards paint a group and post it. Use logic here my friend.

Im done wasting my time here. Go take a course and learn to shoot.

zman,
Up load you pics as is to image shack and select the option to resize them for forums as they upload. Then just copy past the forum link to your post. image shack rules because they will never remove your picture like photo bucket does after a short time. I have pictures over 5 years old still showing up on the boards. After awhile they will ask you to pay but the $5 is a one time fee and that allows a ton of pictures. Of course you could just delete your old ones and never pay if you want to.

You and your boys shooting sounds perfectly inline for me but I frequent LRH myself and shoot 1000 plus yards from time to time. I'm working on getting my 300 and 338 mags out to a mile. You are right. I practice at double the range I want to be able to shoot game makes the hunting shots seem so much easier. If you shoot 2000 I bet 1000 seems pretty lame. 20 years ago I would of have been a god to kill game at 500 yards where now it is not hardly mentionable in my circle.

I let my kids do most of the shooting now days as calling the corrections is far more important than the person pulling the trigger assuming they have the fundamentals down.

You were a bit modest on Carlocks resume.
