A Pre-64 Model 70 .30/06 with 4X Leupold, made in 1952, I found this rifle on the used rack at Cabelas. I re-cut the checkering and then put an oil finish on the stock using an old Outer's stock re-finishing kit. The barrel was pretty well shot out so I bought an action wrench, barrel vise, and headspace gauges and found another Pre-64 barrel on eBay and rebarreled it, my first attempt at doing so. It's not a tack driver but is hunting accurate and everything functions perfectly. And yes, the kitchen floor needs to be scrubbed.

For a perfect "all-arounder" I'd stick with a plain-jane Ought-six.

Yes Shrapnel, they'll go hunting, I believe to do them true justice they need to go afield and make some memories....otherwise they are just art.

What you been poppin' with that .460 in the Volunteer State? My brother, who lives in Colorado these days, has a Smith .460 in case of Blue Whale attacks. Told him to get a No. 1 in .460 for a black timber thumper, but he's holding off.

There are some 400+ pound hogs up there.

Not as pretty as a lot of what's been posted, but at this point my favorite two rifles are. Ruger 77 MKII 7mm Rem Mag wearing a VXIII 4.5-14, bought it back when I was in College in 95-96. Lots of miles being packed on a horse, and even more being bounced around on a four-wheeler. Hunted in sub zero weather and 80+ above. Never once has it's POI ever changed. Couple Elk, quite a few antelope and 20-30 deer. Second is the Remington 700 in 7mm-08 Gander Mtn. gun, Leupold 2.5-8. Only been on one antelope hunt where I took two goats, but it quickly become a new favorite last year. Not the best pictures of each, but it's all I've got

Cal74, purdy ain't got nothing to do with it. It's a nice feature but I don't think it's essential. I'll take a trusted ugly one any day. Nice pictures too!

But purdy helps for some people. I take extra pleasure from hunting with guns I like or have a personal attachment to. I dreamt of building this gun or something like it since I was aobut 18. At 28, I finally did it and have been taking her just about everywhere ever since. From whitetails in Maine, antelope in Wyoming, and elk and mule deer hunts in Colorado, she hasn't let me down yet. And for those that haven't seen this gun 10 times before, it's .264 Win Mag on a Rem 700, 27.5 " stainless Lilja, teflon coated, maple stock. Shoots nicely too. Here is my go to rifle. Left handed Rem 700KS in a Brown Precision kevlar stock chambered in .270 Win and wearing a 3-9x40 Elite 4200 in Talley LW lows. It's light, really fast, and accurate. Kinda ugly, the finish is kinda worn, and I still love it. [img:left] [/img] [img:left] [/img]

Like I said, it's a nice feature but not essential. I take great pleasure in hunting with a nice walnut stocked rifle.

Here is one of mine. Savage 110 30/06 and 3-9X40 Zeiss with cerakoting. If the weather is bad and crapy then this is the one to come out and play. Nothing hurts this rifle. When it gets muddy I just spray it down with the hose and clean out the bore.
