Ann Arbor, Home of U. of M., protector of affirmative action. Whole town is full of liberal weenies. San Francisco of the midwest. When I lived in Michigan Detroit and Ann Arbor were two places I didn't even consider part of Michigan.

School outing proves divisive Trip for black kids to boost test scores riles peers, parents. Karen Bouffard / Detroit News Lansing Bureau. A school trip for African-Americans pupils only at an Ann Arbor elementary school last week was meant to inspire them to greater achievement, but instead ignited protest from other children and their parents. The 25 Dicken Elementary School students were taken to a talk by a rocket scientist. They were members of the "African American Lunch Bunch," a club started by teachers and administrators to improve their test scores. Children who went were booed by classmates when they got back to school, said Ann Arbor School Superintendent Todd Roberts. Parents of children who stayed behind raised a ruckus, and Principal Mike Madison sent home a letter saying the trip could have been approached and arranged better. "This was an effort by staff to provide a group that was struggling more than any other group with extra support and address" the achievement gap, Roberts said. "Obviously, when things cause confusion or upset you need to look at that and see if there are things that could have been done differently." Michiganians voted 58 percent to 42 percent in favor of Proposal 2, the 2006 Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, a constitutional amendment that bans discriminatory or preferential treatment of students on the basis of race, sex and other characteristics. The ban applies to publicly funded universities, colleges and school districts. Roberts said the Lunch Bunch club is run by teacher volunteers, and the money for the trip was donated. No public money was used to fund the trip, he said. Leon Drolet, who led the campaign to get Proposal 2 on the ballot, said it's wrong for a school district to provide something to one group and not to another based solely on their race. "If they want to say we're going to pull out struggling kids and take them on a trip to inspire them, that's fine," Drolet said. "But don't say we're going pull out kids based on their skin color and take them on a field trip." The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan opposed the amendment, and along with other groups, is fighting it in court. This ain't one of your run of the mill inner-city schools either.

Of course that group is struggling.
But seriously, it really wasn't based on race. We all know that was just coincidental.

Anne Arbor racist insanity. I am beginning to believe the only solution is to divide the country, letting the "progressives" deal with their version of "utopia" and let the rest of us prosper in reality.

Agreed.
I shouldn't be surprised given U of M installed foot baths for the moslems. Might as well cater to everyone but the "man".

Malcom X wanted to partition Kalipornya off for the coloreds, and the rest of the country for the whites. He did have some good ideas.

Ann Arbor school sends black kids to hear rocket scientist, but bans white kids from trip. Help me out, here: Where does it state that white kids wanted to go but were refused? I am somewhere between "ironically amused" and "need to heave" that self appointed 'conservatives' are angling for 'victimhood'. Whatsamatter, are you ticked because the nanny-state is not making you, as a parent, expendable? You are not a conservative, you are a whiner. Frankly, presented as an extra-curricular activity I have ZERO heartburn over the fieldtrip. The booing by the left-behinds and the bungled intercession by the principal are not Michigan's finest moment. Get over it.
I am a conservative with a lowercase "c".

I can't find it myself. All it appears is that the black educator selected black students to see a black speaker. Citing that the trip was a benefit because as I reflect upon the look of excitement, enthusiasm and energy that I saw in these childrens eyes as they stood in the presence of a renowned African American rocket scientist in a very successful position, it gave the kids an opportunity to see this type of achievement is possible for even them Again, a black educator making race an issue. I'm sick of folks making race an issue. Both those who hate blacks cause they're black - and blacks feeling they need a little more preferential treatment - like their own publicly funded field trip - because they're black.

There is no ambiguity here; a select group of students were allowed a special privilege based solely upon their race. Now what do we call that again?

Here I go getting myself in trouble. And me being something of a racist too. In this particular case I don't see a problem with the trip. Looks like it was an informal group within the school, financed by outside funds. When I was in school we had group activities outside the school, of course it wasn't race based because as far as I know the entire school would have been considered white. Actually it does seem wrong, but not enough forthe uproar. Are we getting like many blacks and hispanics, just waiting for something to be offended about. Gonna run and put on my Nomex coveralls now.

Ann Arbor is THE center of Liberalism in Michigan. That principal is obviously one position grade above his intellectual level; maybe several grades. But then, Liberals have no common sense.
