Finally...someone figured it out!

I believe Eleanor O'Connor did her "one-shot safari" (17 animals with 19 shots) with the 160 Speer Hot-Core at 2650 or so from a 7x57.

I have been using the 160 Sierra GameKing at 2700 for a few years in the same cartridge and have yet to experience a jacket/core separation, at ranges from 100 to 375 yards. In fact all but one have exited. Haven't shot anything bigger than 250 pounds or so but gee....

My deer/plainsgame load for thick bush/timber is going to be a Win. Mod 95 SRC in 30-06 loaded with 220 gr. Sierras..I want them to expand but not to break up..After some testing the big Sierras seemed to work best on light bodied animals..The 220 gr. Nosler partition will be for elk and up..They both have the exact same POI and both will shoot into a couple of inches at 100 yards. The 220 gr. Woodleighs will also shoot to the same POI, but I have not tested them much as to their expansion in a media or in game. 458 told me that pentrated about half as much as a Nosler and expanded big time so I shot a few of them into some magazines and they do expand and they penetrated a bit more than the Sierras so I need to do some more playing around with them but they do have som potential IMO.

If I were hunting cow elk or deer with my .375 H&H then the Sierra 250 or 300 gr. Sierra would be a fine bullet IMO, and I'm not saying it wouldn't work 100% on a big bull elk or moose, just that I'm sold on premium bullets as the best insurance you can buy when hunting for big bodied trophy animals..

While not a .375, I have used the 225 gr. Sierra BT from a .35 Whelen a fair bit and it is a accurate, inexpensive bullet that puts stuff down in a hurry. I had one separate from the jacket in a average size black bear at about 80 yds, but the bear was dead in the trail, never took a step. At about 2650 fps in my rifle, it is a great deer load. My favorite in the Whelen is the 225 gr. Partition in handloads or the 225 gr. TBBC in Federal factory loads. Those are loads to go anywhere, do anything that you would need the Whelen for, but for paper and game less than 500 lbs, the Sierra is just fine.

Well I can tell you one thing. Sierra does not sell a single bullet to use on game in California.....

Although I didn't use them, then return (akin to JB's experience), I just starting using Sierras in the last year or two. Don't know what I was waiting for.

I have a 35 Whelen AI that seems to like 225 SGKs over Re-15, and I just purchased some 300's for my recent Rem 798 375 H&H acquisition.

Question: Are the .375" 250 grainers relatively short like the .358" 225 SGKs are? I load my 35 WAI at 3.340" and I seem to barely get the 225s seated before the press handle bottoms out.

Anybody shoot an elk last season with the 250gr SGK? I hope to shoot a cow this year with one.

Yup! if memory serves correctly......

I always liked Speer Hot Cores.

I can't imagine a bull elk walking away from a 250-375 Gameking, either. They sure do make the debris fly from the 400 yard line smile

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.
