I am thinking of having a .577 built on a Ruger #1. Do I need it? Absolutely!!!!!!!!!! It will probably never see Africa but it will be a blast to shoot. reflex264

Go for it! There's no such thing as overkill! Dead is dead no matter how big the hole.

Definitely yes. Especially if your future orthopedic surgeon is a shooter. The extra bucks will allow him/her to buy more nice rifles or take some great hunts for them and their kids. Hell, may even do the same for some retinal specialist.
Your not only scratching your own itch, but allowing others to do the same. Win/win.

Make sure you build it to 12# or so. It won't be more than a hard shove.

More like 15 to accomplish THAT feat. My 416 Rigby which I load to near 416 WBY levels is a 12 pounder and its recoil is NOT a nice hard shove, it is like getting struck by a large fist going really fast. To the point, Why not? The gnsmith that puts the barrel on can take it back off if you tire of getting beat up after a year or two. IDEA!!!! Put a steel buttplate on it and use it as your LOANER deer rifle

Yall better talk me out of my next... That'll be the day... Bunch of enablers around here, is what it is. Here is the straight truth for you: You idea is very much what you say in the title. It is just your next stupid idea. Take a close look - .577 Tyrannosaur. See, the name clearly states the use for the cartridge. Have you seen any such one around lately? And if, would you want to face it with a single shot? I rest my case.

You gents are a lot of help!!!!!!! My Rigby when loaded hot will really get you attention. I backed it back down to 2500fps with 400grs. It still kicks worse than a .458 by a good margin but is manageable. I love the ideal about the steel butt plate and loaning it out!!!!! That would be funny. I know a few that I would want to shoot it. I had my heart set on a .450NE at Larry's in Huntsville but it got gone. Now I am thinking bigger. reflex264

I await the pictures and range report.

If you want a cheap easy conversion, take a 458 WinMag and a simple rechamber to 450 NE just to get your feet wet. I've for 2 450 NE's and love them. With the Ruger you can hotrod them on up too.

Man, asking this bunch (of which I am a proud member ) to talk you out of a gun build is like trying to hold an AA meeting in the middle of a liquor store. It just ain't gonna work.

I have been intrigued with the .577 since grade school. Hemingway gets the blame for it. There is just something special about throwing a hockey puck for a bullet. I have been researching this project. It won't be cheap. By the time I buy dies, brass and have the conversion done it will be a pretty penny. For some reason that is detering my thinking. I still want one. I wonder if my wife will kill me? Descisions, descisions.............reflex264

I'd heed safariman's advice on more weight. Otherwise I have two words for you: detached retina. If it trips your trigger, go for it! I'm waiting on a 416 Rem mag to get barreled myself. I hope to go to Africa some day but until then I believe it will suffice on odocoileus virginianus giganticus.

Seeing as how Rugers work with rimless cases, maybe one in my 585HE. Long Belted case that outruns T-rex and you don't have to take out so much metal from feed trough on the Ruger.Ed

I have a little more math to do. My thoughts right now are I can manage the .577 without a muzzle brake. The finished weight would be around 15lbs. Anything bigger and I would need to put a brake on it. This project would be the counter to another project. I am only planning on one really big gun. The other option was a .505 Gibbs. It doesn't hurt that I have a rifle builder for a buddy. He just built me a tack driving .416 Taylor and is working on my son's .264 custom right now. I know he will treat me right.
Ed- do you have drawings of the cartridge?
Mike- If I do this the .405 will be for sale.
Common sense should prevail and I should hunt down a .450NE Ruger but now and then I have problems with common sense. I just like the ideal of throwing a huge bullet. Truthfully when I do go to Africa the Taylor or the Rigby will go. I can cycle that .416 Taylor very fast and hit what I am shooting at while doing so. reflex264

Reflex, you need to look at this thread from AR about the 577 NE and look at Aussie Steve's remark about his 577 NE Ruger. http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/4711043/m/2861045231

There is drawing of the case on Ammoguide. It is 3.25" long, with .653" belt/rim and .634" base. I've put it in P14 Enfields, Ruger77, FBW Model S and Model L Falling blocks, in a NEF single shot, in a OlyArms BBK, and big MRC PH bolt gun. It'll work in any big bolt that 505 goes into, as picture shows the same length for bolt gun mags and of course single shots no problem. I can out run Trex with one in any model gun. And belted case design last for many firings.ED
