Who still chambers rifles in the 257 Roberts? If no one, what length action would one need to put a 257 Roberts barrel on? Short or standard. I have a 7mm-08 Rem 700 CDL. Yes, I'm stuck on the 257 Roberts.

Kimber chambers for it. I don't have a Ruger catalog in front of me but I'm pretty sure they still offer it in the 77 Hawkeye Ultra-Light in walnut/blue. Remington offered it in '09 in the limited edition CDL SF 75th Anniversay model and there are still some of those floating around. High end makers like Cooper & Dakota offer it. You can always get a custom shop Encore barrel as well.

Remington has the Special Anniversary this year as mentioned above. Ruger and Browning also chamber in it that I know of.

Ruger makes them with standard (.30-06) length actions in both standard (22 barrel) and Ultra-Light (20 barrel) Hawkeye. My older M77 (long action, 22 bbl) is easily my favorite rifle.

Some manufacturers use a short (.308 Win length) action, which works fine for most purposes. If you want to extract the most from your .257 and your chamber dimensions will allow it, as does my Ruger M77, a long action allows bullets to be seated out further. With +P loads and bullets seated out over standard MAX COL, my Roberts is a short step behind a .25-06.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Does anybody know if the old M70 XTR push feeds are a long or short action?

They are on the long action, but with the magazine filler so that the box and follower are "short".If you want, these can be removed and replaced so the action will handle 30/06 length cartridges.

Brinky,
That short action 700 you have will work fine.

Kimber's rifle is a short action roberts, 2.815 is the maximum length to the tip. Here are two short action rifles, select classic Bob and Montana 308 about 1 inch for both yesterday. I think the Montana is going to like RL15 over Varget, the Bob really likes IMR4350 and 100 grain bullets

Jimmy, my Rob Montana seems to really dote on RL17.

I'm stuck on them too.
I have four rifles chambered in 257 Roberts; a custom on a Rem 700 SA, a Rem 700SA Mountain Rifle, a Rem 722SA, and a Ruger 77 Mk II Long Action. Ruger still makes these rifles in their Hawkeye configuration, and maybe their light weight 77, with a short barrel????

Savage will make you a 257 Roberts. Call 800-370-0708, ext 6, and ask for Effie Sullivan. I have a blue, short action, left-hand with AccuTrigger and AccuStock that I really, really like. With minimal load development it puts 6- 100 gr Nosler Partitions into 1.1 inches at 100 yds with a healthy dose of H-4831SC. My only regret is that I didn't get it in stainless, but I may rectify that shortly with another.

I got it too late last year to do much load development, but the whitetail buck didn't seem to notice. This year I hope to get it noticably under 1", but if not, it will still suit me fine. Now if I can get them to chamber for 6.5x55 I will be really, really happy!

Brad, I really want a Montana in the Bob set up the same way as my select classic. A matched set like Marty has. The 308 is fine for a rain gun but just want to keep things constant.

I keep thinking to sell the Kimber in 308, buy another little sky in Bob, then buy an A7 in 308 and put a tripod on it like Sam's rifle.

Have you tried any H100V in your Montana????

Used, you can look for Remington 7600's and 760's as well as Browning's BLR. I had a BLR that shot great with factory Winchester loads, but ended up sticking with the 7600. I prefer the pump action to the lever. I have handled a Kimber Montana in 257 and man that was a nice rifle! I had all I could do to walk away from it.

Thanks for the info. I will check into the rebarrel job on my 700. If not I will get a Ruger. I had a 25-06 and what I'm looking for is what the Bob delivers. SIgnificantly more than the 250 Savage and not all the blast of the 06.

BTW I'm pretty sure Steelhead is screwing a Roberts barrel on a 700 SA this summer, or may have it done already. He may be a font of knowledge for ya...

One last question. Is the improved version worthwhile or are the modern +P loads more than enough. Looking at the load data the +P's look like what I want out of the rifle as I'm not looking for a magnum just a light easy deer gun.

brinky:

IME, when loaded at equal pressures, the AI version will yield about 50-75 fps extra. Then you have the "hassle" of fireforming brass, but then the brass "never" has to be trimmed.

I love my AI's but my most recent 257 is a standard Bob on a M70 short action.

brinky:I've killed antelope out 400 yards or so with the standard Roberts and 100 gr bullets...with 115's at 3000,I think the standard case would be fine.
