So I bought this beautiful supergrade in 300 win mag. Couldnt pass on the pattern in the stock, I just had to have it. Now I have it and dont know what to do with it. I have only taken it out of the box once for pictures. It is a new one made under the FN name with a barrel stamp of morgan UT.
It just seems to pretty to hunt with. I tried selling it for $900.00 but it didnt move.
I would like to hear from supergrade owners that have taken their beauties out in the field elk or deer hunting. Was it painful? or did you not think twice about it?

Nothing is too pretty to hunt with. To me, having a pretty rifle just adds to the hunt. I hunt with my pretty custom rifle, and am more proud of her for it. I'm in over $2,500 on that gun, but am pretty sure I can repair any major dings I put in the stock. So far, I haven't had anything to worry about. I just don't lean her against rocks.

Good Lord man, you didn't buy the Mona Lisa to pin up to your bedroom door with chewed gum! Get out and use the thing or sell it to someone who will. Yes, some guns are fine works of art, but the real beauty of them is that they are FUNCTIONAL and USEFUL works of art!!! One thing you will discover when you take it out hunting is that if/when you mark/ding it (and it WILL happen) you will have stories to go with the ding of the hunt and you will remember them each time you pick up the gun. That's what I've discovered with my beautiful M70 FWT ss/walnut in .30-06. It's the only gun I've purchased because of it's looks, but it's harvested dozens of deer. It has a few dings, I do baby it, but I know what hunt each ding is from, and I still have fond memories of good stalks and long shots made with the rifle, it's one I won't ever sell, and I don't say that often or lightly.

This is a common phenomenon amoung collectors of the British "big name" rifles. They wrap them in cotton wool and cuddle them on sight, never taking in consideration that the Rigby's, Holland's and Westley Richard's of this world were made for vagabond rich kids to slaughter the local wildlife in far off lands.

That is precisely why I only buy utlity grade stainless/synthetic rifles, I am too anal to take a pretty rifle with high grade wood stocks hunting, I'll just be worried about scratching and dinging them up, if I use a rifle that's not so pretty I enjoy the hunt a lot more. I'm not discouraging anyone else from doing it, it just doesn't work for me due to my slightly OCD/moderately anal nature. grin

My Kimber Select Grade is headed to the Brooks Range on a 10 day sheep hunt this fall. I expect a few scars, but can't wait to see how she looks leaning against a dall ram.

Take out the Supergrade. You can always get another stock, but I doubt you'd ever need to.

Pretty guns do look good leaning next to dead stuff:

I have one in 270WSM supergrade my wife gave me for a anniversary present. It is an outrageous rifle. Very accurate and wood beyond my imagination. I use it sparingly, only when I know I won't mess it up. It is heavy, very accurate, and a pleasure to shoot. She wants me to use it more, but I want to keep it perfect. She is correct, I need to use it more, it's why she gave it to me.

There is no accounting for taste.

Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.

Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however,
Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

I just bought a South Carolina-made Model 70 Super Grade in .30/06. So far, all I've done is get it zeroed on paper at 100 yards with some factory ammo. The trigger is a little heavy but crisp; it's one of the new triggers they put on the Model 70. (I never thought there was anything wrong with the old trigger but the lawyers probably dictated it.)

Anyway, the rifle if pretty but I still want to take it hunting.

Cool, Mine is South Carolina made as well. It is just a beautiful rifle. Don't know what has taken me so long to become a model 70 fan.

Thanks for posting

Here's mine, a .270 circa 2001. Next to his little brother the .25-06. I've killed a few whitetails with the rifle, but I usually reach for something else, because of the weight more than anything else, that sucker is well over 9 lbs. scoped.

So I got a new stock for it, over a pound lighter and I can change 'em out and have the best of both worlds. And not worry about dinging the stock:

This is kinda like not having sex with a woman because she is too beautiful....the rifle and the woman were each made for a particular purpose, and both should be put to the correct use...

Would you put the woman under glass and admire her from a distance? I doubt it..... cool

I've stuck a G&H 338 in a scabbard and chased elk with it;likewise a Goens 270.....take the rifle hunting! grin

No, but if she was too heavy to tote around in the mountains, I'd give her your phone number......
