I recently inherited a Savage Model 990 lever action 308 rifle with a Weaver 4.5 scope. The rifle appears to be in nice condition. I took it out to the range yesterday and was able to get a decent grouping at 50 yards.

I believe it is a newer Savage model 99 - purchased around 1990 due to the box style magazine but not sure.

Can anyone tell me more about it? How long was it in production? When was it discontinued? Etc. Any idea what it might be worth? I don't intend to sell it - just curious ....

The 99C was made from 1965 up into the very late 90's.. though with gaps when it wasn't being produced. Several variations of them with different styles of checkering, buttplates, forearms, etc. If you can give us the first part of the serial number, we can probably tell you what year it was made.

The Serial number is: 1161xxx. I have also included a photo of the detail on the checkering. (if I do it correctly). [Linked Image]

wow, that thing is clean! Butt pad is not factory but all around a nice clean gun and will make a nice enough hunting rifle. Should be somewhere around 68 or so but that is just a WAG... someone else can tell you more exactly.

Probably dates to 1967, might look on the front of the lever by the serial number and see if you can see 1 or 2 stamped numbers following by a letter inside of a circle. If the letter is a U, it's 1967. A V would be 1968. Might not be able to read it, often stamped pretty lightly.

Definitely nice looking rifle, should make for a great field gun. Treat it well, and bring back some pictures of a nice deer or two in the fall.

Thanks for all the info. The stamp behind the SN is "54V" - therefore it must be a '68. A bit older than I thought, but in great condition. I must confess I am not a hunter but enjoy target shooting. However, I may look into getting a license and join my neighbor when he goes out into the woods next time.

Incidentally I also have a 20 gauge Savage 220L-D. Not sure how useful a single shot shotgun is, but it is part of my growing collection.

Glad to have found this forum and look forward to reading all the posts.

Thanks for that update, I'll put it into my notes as a 1968.

Don't have any of the 219's/220's, but they are fairly popular.
