I've been thinking of parting company with one of these two rifles.

Both are heavy barreled Sakos, chambered in 222 Rem.

Both are dead stock.

Both shoot lights out (so to speak).

The rifle at the top is a Vixen, L461 action.

The rifle on the bottom has the heavier S491 action.

My question to you guys that know a thing or two about Sakos, is which would you keep and why?

Keep them BOTH!
I currently have 6 Varminters in caliber 222 Remington (including one mint heavy barrel Sako!) and I would NOT consider selling a single one of them!
Yes you can only shoot one Rifle at a time but a person can surely switch Rifles and take turns having fun with them in rotation!
And I own a number of Sako Rifles - again I would entertain selling exactly NONE of them!

Me? I'd keep the L461.

i have couple of sakos, but only one in .222. i like the one with the darker wood and the leup. so sell that one to me and keep the other.

I know this is purely baiting but OK I'll bite. In 222 anyone with sense will keep the L461. This was a truely scaled action.

The L491 was scaled only in bolt length not in bolt diameter & hence receiver diameter as well. However, if you wanted a 223 AI etc, or a hotrod wildcat on the short action then the L491 may be more suitable.

As far as I'm concerned the L series Sakos were the best of the lot and the A series a way down second choice..Especially the L-461, it is an awesome example of the best of gunsmithing from a factory source.

My all time favorite rifle is a custom L-461 in 6x45 caliber with a M-70 safety made from a piece of bull barrel, a 20 inch barrel, a 0 tolerence chamber, a beautiful little stock in English styleing with egg cheek piece and a Neidner steel butt and grip cap, a fantastic peice of wood that is full fiddleback and checkered 28 LPI as I recall. Weighs 5.6 pounds and shoot very tiny bench rest type groups..I would never sell it, and not many guns have that distenction around my house..

I'd keep the L461...not a doubt in my mind.

Ray what was the difference between the L461 and the A1? I thought it was only the bolt shroud shape?

Yep, plus cocking indicator an at times the trigger assembly.

The S491 is a different action and bottom metal will vary as well.

For numbers, the 491 is rarer.....
