Hi, I thought you could make .35 brass from 30/06 (read it on the internet somewhere!). I tried it one step and no-go even with Imperial wax. If I have to buy a 338 die for an intermediate step, I'll probably just buy the brass to have the right head stamp. Is there an easy way to do it? Thanks, Von

Not sure what's wrong. Lube inside the neck a little, too, but that should be all you need to do.

Never had an issue, make sure you have a tapered expander +1 -Bob F. Oops. Just used a plain RCBS die. For several years now (IIRC), RCBS dies in .35 Whelen have come standard with a tapered expander. I use RCBS dies for my .35 Whelen and my dies do have a tapered expander. Unscrew the expander from the die and take it out to examine it. A tapered contour will be obvious when compared to a regular expander. -Bob F.

You don't need to buy any dies. Using your 30-06 cases:
Prime with pistol primers. Lube cases with good case lube. Load a test case with 10 to 12 grains of Bullseye or other fast pistol powder (generally, I go light with a .25-06 case and use a bit more with a .30-06 case). Wad sheet of toilet tissue into a loose ball and tamp it down lightly atop the powder charge. Fill case to the mouth with inert filler (Cream of Wheat, Instant Ralston, corn meal, etc) but not flour. Close mouth with smear of Vaseline, cast-bullet lube, paraffin wax, or a disc of paper from a paper punch. Insert case in chamber with muzzle up. Fire.
This is Ken Howell's method, and believe me, it really works.

Or just run it through the standard size die with a tapered expander plug!! I accidentally ran twenty 270 cases through my 35 Whelen sizer several years ago. Didn't notice it until I was cleaning the cases after firing. They worked fine. Haven't doen that since though. There's just something not right about looking at 270 headstamped rounds in my 35 Whelen box!!!

You can't give me the Remington stuff... I use Hornady One Shot lube and RCBS dies as noted above with no issues.

I'm going to have to look inside the die, but the case goes in about an eight of an inch, starts belling to .35, and then stops cold. Like maybe the bell is hitting the side of the die. Too many people have done this for it to be a problem. I'm going to raise the expander up some when I get home from work to make sure the flare gets inside the body of the die. Like Ken Howell's method. May try it just to say I did. Von

I've been making 35 Whelen cases from 30-'06 cases with RCBS dies and Imperial Sizing Die Wax since 1987. No problems. I hope you get yours going.

Sorry to be so long getting back. I was watching/prepping for the storm. Now that it has fizzled out, I tested my theory of the brass belling too soon and hitting the die and that was it. I backed the decapper higher up into the die and it worked just fine.
Thanks for all the encouragement. Von
