I purchased a Remington 504 that has been touched by the hand of an amature gunsmith. apparently it wouldn't group well for him so he free floated the barrel and removed some wood at the receiver / barrel. His only problems were actually scope mounting. The rings weren't aligned and he used Bubba force to tighten the rings. After aligning the rings and torquing to 15 in/lbs it shot better than a shot gun pattern. I then placed card stock at the forend tip and the rifle now groups 2"+ at 50 yards. Any other suggested cures? This rifle should do better. Barrel crown is good.I know 10-22's shot better with barrel contact the full length of the barrel. Most .22's (if the barrels aren't threaded ) shouldn't be free floated. What is the best method of action / barrel bedding for this rifle. Also does any one make a quality synthetic? Something along the lines of H&S Precision.

Throw that stock barrel out and order a Lilja barrel. I had two Rem 504's and they wouldn't group at all.

I have a 504 that is giving me trouble as well. Sounds like the same guy owned mine that owned yours. He cut the bedding out at the end of the barrel as well. I am getting better groups than yours (around 1 to 1 1/4") at 50 but still not what I expected. I have skim bedded the action but have not gotten a chance to play with it again. I hope that helps it but I do wonder.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

Two choices here..... buy a Lilja barrel. Or trade it in on a older Remington 22 or better yet a CZ 22 LR. Sometime after my 541T was made in 1996. Remington somehow forgot how to make a decent 22 rimfire barrel. Bought a 572 and a 504 in the last ten years. Neither would shoot worth a hoot. 2"+ at 50 yards was normal for my long gone 504. The 572 shoots 3" to 4" at 50 yards. Never again will I buy a Remington.

Go to the www.rimfirecentral.com site, and the Rem forum There's a guy (Bob513) (Post)in the last 2 days or so who cant get a 504 to group for anything and sold it Plus a bunch of other guys with the same issue--one has a Lilja bbl and Leupold 6x20 scope and about $1,500 in to his,and shooting Eley Tenex and still can't get under 3/4" at 50 yards. Moral--as good as Rem can make a gun, the 504 wasn't one of them. Here's my Rem 597TVPSS, now with a Volquartsen bbl. With the stock bbl I was at .50" at 50 yards and Wolf MT ammo. With the VQ bbl I am at .28" at 50 yds (yes, with Wolf MT ammo--CCI SV ammo is about .35". This is a semi, not a bolt gun so Rem. can make some good guns. Liked my cheapy 581 too, but then traded it towards this one. The gun was $425 and the VQ bbl was $275--so it wasn't a bad shooter with the stock bbl.

I took one in for a partial trade last year. It was like new (no box). Trigger had been adjusted down and I want to say it was bedded, but can't quite remember.
It'll do 1/2" at 50 yards if you do your part with decent ammo, don't know what it'd do with match ammo?

The 504 has been a hit and miss rig from jump, if you REALLY want one me thiks you have a new barrel in you're future. Or, get a 541T and call it a day.

Have only known a couple of people that have had a 504. No matter what was done the best groups were around an inch and a half at 50 yds.

Unfortunately, you are better off just finding a 541-S or -T. But you already have the rifle.

My 504 shoots pretty good (1/2-3/4) with the a couple of loads (standard velocity target stuff), but my old 581 will shoot circles around it with just about any ammo you feed it.

I have had two 504's and both would shoot 1/2" 5 shot groups at 40 yds with good ammo, I have a buddy who also has one and his shoots better than either of mine did.............VaHillbilly.

I bought two of them and both will shoot 1/2" or better at 50yds. Shooting from a bench I have noticed that they are stock pressure sensitive.

Well I finally sold the 504. Bought an OLD 511. Almost 1 hole at 35 yards with Wally World bulk ammo. Time to back up a few yards.
