I am looking for a solid, all weather 30-06 and have narrowed my search to the Winchester 70 Extreme Weather SS or Kimber Montana 8400. I have handled the Winchester a little and it feels a little thick in the stock but not horrible. I have yet to get my hands on the Kimber and may have to make a trip out of town to a dealer. I would like to get opinions and thoughts from those who have owned one or both of these rifles. So what would you choose and why. Thanks in advance.

I have a AW rifle in the 270. I have on order a Hunters edge for it. I like the rifle its a better shooter than I am. I have got on a good day 1/2 groups at 200 abeit 3 shot groups why screw it up . I have no complaints at all about the gun and the stock was a little thick and I wanted a more slim line so I ordered the MCmillian. I actually have 2 one in a 308 and both are good shooters with my hand loads. I have no experience with the Kimber 8400.

I'd wait for an 84L Montana.

or get the Kimber Montana in 300WSM. The 8400 LA always felt a little awkward in my hands.

I'd be all over Blues suggestion as well, especially if he owned one that was a known shooter and he tossed in one of his cow pups as well..

I have several Kimbers but will not buy the 8400 long action. If you have got to have it now, get the Win extreme weather if you can wait then wait for the kimber 84L

I agree. I purchased an EW in 30-06 and it is ridiculously accurate, barrel is smooth, bolt works like it's on greased bearings. Have other M70's (SC) and they are the same.

#3 on the M70 over the Kimber - and sell the B&C stock and get a McM. Ends up about the same $, but I prefer the Winnie.

The EW in a McM Edge Supergrade will go about 7.5lbs with Talleys and a VX3 3.5-10X40, about 5-6oz less than it does with the B&C stock.

I tell you what, I get so many requests for pups I might have to breed a litter. But I'm gonna trade them for hunting trips...I'll deliver them to you in time for a Muley or bear hunt.

I hope Ingwe doesn't want one...I might have to trade a runt for a dink...

Ok, what are your thoughts on the Thompson Center Icon compared to the new Winchester 70?

One is a nice Winchester Model 70 and the other is just a TC...

you would be better with a Salvage package rifle than an Icon

I love my M84 Montana, Compared to a M70 it's a no brainer. However, in large calibers, 375 up, I love the M70. As long as the Kimber works ok. I want to try a M84L Montana in 270 or 3006 though, or maybe something a little bigger, to compliment my 260!. Would like to try the 8400, but only in WM or 375H&H.

I have both in short mags and like them both. The Kimber is 12-14 oz lighter, an inch shorter and balances/ points a little better for me. Don't assume that an ss gun is rust proof. Coat it with Ultra Gun Coat as soon as you get it. I'm leaning towards sending the Win down the road.
