Is there a way to smooth out an orange peely finish on cerakote without removing too much material?

1000 grit wet or dri sand paper, then polishing or rubbing compound on a soft rag. Be careful around the edges and corners.

Far easier to blast and re-shoot though.

If you have orange peel with Ceracote you have issues with your preparation , I'd strip and start over . The devil is in the prep !

Did you use the recommended 120 grit aluminum oxide at no more than 50 psi?

I didn't do the application and I don't want to deal with having it redone if I can help it.

If it is uniformly rough, it was probably a mal-adjusted gun...in my case, I had the whole rifle (in pieces) shot and looking good when I noticed what looked like what might be a thin spot on the side of the barrel. No problem...

Except Mr. Murphy took a dump in my spray gun when I wasn't looking. eek

Tip was partially plugged so that the touch-up went on very dry. Hoping it would flow out in the oven I went ahead and baked it but no joy. So the sanding and polishing was an experiment to see if it was possible. And it worked.

The barrel might be a little glossier than the action, but you have to look hard to notice. Or I might be imagining it. smile

Synthetic steel wool and wet sanding with oil will drop the orange peel but bring the gloss level up. Sounds like they ran the pressure to low.

Mcray I feel your pain, had just finished up a rifle and went to do a touch up and "splat" chunk of buildup from the front of the gun ruined the job. Oh well at least it was mine.
