on the Africa forum. Forget Alaska. The only thing you'd need a .375 for there would be a brown bear. On a cost per animal basis, it's cheaper to go to Africa and get an elephant, buffalo, hippo, and some plains game than a good brown bear hunt in Alaska.
In Africa you can take a shower every night, eat sitting at a table with silverware, have your laundry done daily, and never ever worry about rain or cold weather. And forget those miserable hip boots.

[/quote] Forgot the pedicure/manicure. The hip boots surely are a killer for those that love to sashe in the meadow.

All Alaskan hunters can be successful in Africa. Not all African hunters can be successful in Alaska.

I haven't been over there but Art can help with weather data. (I am not sure, but you might be able to rent a Zodiac and 9.9 from the Base here if you have MWR status) www.kodiakmwr.com

Yep, in Af-freak-a, all you have to do is carry your gun and pull the trigger. They'll drive you around in a Land Rover, spot the game and set up the shooting sticks just right for you. They'll gut it, cut it, transport it, and give all the meat away. You'll feel like the Great White Hunter you are knowing that you've earned (read: paid for) your trophies. P.S. - they'll probably wipe your butt for you too!

Do Alaska when young (or old) and tough, and Africa when not so tough.

Is it as windy in there as everybody says it is? I'm planning on renting a 12' Zodiak for that hunt.. At the upper end in Viekoda passage it's pretty narow so unless a real blow starts it's not too bad. The bay itself is big water and could get really nasty. There was one night that was blowing about 70 mph. We were on a 50' commercial purse seiner and had to enter a little back "pond" on Uganik Island to anchor up. It was friggin howling through the rigging all night long and there were even waves on the pond. If your camping I'd find a place where you can drag the boat out of the water just in case. If there's a storm coming get off the water.

If I can, I'm going to base out of that refuge cabin. We'll see if i can book it before somebody else. The success rate in the last 3 springs has been terrible for residents, but the guided hunters have done pretty well in the spring. The residents did pull 2 boars in 07 (I think that was the year) with a 28" average skull size.

I should have mentioed that we were there in Nov. on a deer hunt. I don't have a clue on the springtime weather. I guess it was good and bad that we didn't see any any bears on that trip too. I just had to say "guess" because Art likes to yell at me when I guess. I looked up where the cabin is and we didn't make to that part of the bay. Cool part of Kodiak Island though. There were a bunch of deer out on the point just around the corner from the cabin. We saw a killer whale chasing a seal up against the rocks near the point. That was awesome to see up close. Good luck on the hunt.

what's the vegetation look like on the hills? Is it brush, or does the alpine start low. Now that I know you hunted that area, I'm going to have a ton of questions.
