I decided to build a scout rifle on a Savage 99. I am a southpaw, and Col. Cooper recommended it.

My dad had a 99 when I was a kid, first centerfire rifle I ever shot.

There is a lot of collector value in good old 99's, so I needed to find one w/ minimal colector value.

After a year of looking, I found one at auctionarms. It is a 99A, S/N B497XXX. Someone chopped the bbl to 16 3/4".

Here is a pic:

After I removed old scope base, installed XS ghost ring sights, trimmed 3/4" off the stock, and put 5 coats of crinkle paint on the stock, this is what I got:

Still gotta install the leupold scout scope, gonna happen this month. gonna use the leupold QD rings.

Also saw some stocks here that someone painted. Anyone got a link, that would be cool.

Thanks,

Ken

Ballistic_ken, I like that! It should ba as handy as a shirt pocket, even with the scope. I would probably move the front sling to a barrel band type, just to get it out of the way and also so that it would carry even lower on your shoulder. Of course as it is it probably doesn't stick up above your head when you are carrying it on your shoulder.

It looks like you also replaced or reground the recoil pad as it looks much nicer in the "after" photo. Please update us as you proceed with the scope mounting etc.

Good shooting,
Weagle

I did have to do a little shaping on the pad, gotta love a belt sander.

I would love to find another in .358. I understand that they are rare, and again I'd need one that womeone had bubba'd. I don't want to ruin a collectable rifle.

H Talon-thanks, will send an e-mail

Savage never made a "trapper" model that I know of, but they should have. That is a very handy configuration.

The top gun is my 250-300 that I bought in 1972. It has a 20" barrel and is topped with a Leopold 2-7

"The Model 99A saddle gun is a re-introduction of the eariler 1899 A short rifle. A true saddle rifle, the last Model 99 offered with straight-grip stock was the Model H carbine back in 1920. The 250 Savage (.250-300) cartridge was also re-introduced with this model. The .250 was last offered in the 99F in 1961. The Model 99A was brought out in 1971 in calibers .243 Win., .250 Sav, .300 Sav, .308 Win. In 1981 the .375 Win was added. Sadly, this fine rifle was discontinued during 1982, making it the last straight grip schnoble forend Rotary Magazine 99 made." [Linked Image]

Is a .308.

It shoots good, I got 3" offhand at 100yds w/ ghost ring sights, Rem 150 gn core-lokt. I expect that to tighten up with the scope.

It didn't like the surplus ammo at all.

What ballistic effects are to be expected from going from a 22" to 16 3\4"? Will accuracy and velocity drop much?

BK I have a 358 WCF Series A project going. Just need to shorten the LOP and get the scout base on. I choose from two scopes with the QRW rings. The aperture sits in an ammo pouch on the buttstock. It is sighted in with the Williams Firesight front. The original folding rear sight is sighted in as well. Sling stud on the barrel. You might look at the Eagle Arms Site for the buttstock pack. It has room for several items and ammo loops. The stock wrap around has a thin padding and is made to be an adjustable fit. My original butt pad was taken off as it was disintegrating. I have been hunting with the pad removed. When I have the work done I will post a picture. Good hunting. Hi, my name is Rusty Zipper. I'm a Savage 99 addict...................and hopelessly hooked.

I am going to see if I can't chronograph and compare my 16 3/4" bbl to a 18", 20", etc. Get some real #'s to compare.

It may take a bit, but will get it done.

Any of you guys seen anything like this?

Guy says it's been branded on there or stamped. Let me know if you've ever seen anything like this, it's got me confused. It's another A series 99A saddle gun.

Ya the serial number is on the left side, it's an A series rifle.

There's a goat on the one side and a sheep on the other. Mountain of course, not farm.
