I met John Burns of Greybull Precision in Casper last night and we had a great meal and talked rifles and hunting.

Today we hooked up at my buddy, Bill's ranch in Wyoming and John had me, Bill and my other friend John, killing rocks at up to 1205 yards. After instructions from John, we all managed to hit what we aimed at ,and all got trophy rocks...at ranges from 800+ to 1205 yards.

It was a real trip to watch those 140 Bergers slap into those stones at over 1000 yards. We mostly shot John's custom 264 Win Mag with handloads of the 140 Bergers at close to 3200 fps. Scope was the custom Leupold VX3 4.5-14x50 with the Greybull reticle and turrets.

Since none of us had previously done this type shooting at these distances, we all got a big kick out of it,and I wanted to post here to thank John for the opportunity and the fun we had today.

And before anyone asks, I was not asked to post this on the CF: but my pal Bill is sitting here with me and figured we owed John an "attaboy" for the good time we had today. I am posting this from Bill's ranch grin

Thanks,John! Bill, John and I hope we can do this again soon!It was great fun! wink grin

Was the 264 you shot built on one of Greybull's stocks? If so, how did you like it? I'm considering one to replace a McMillan A3 I have on a Remington 223.

Careful Bob, this is very addictive, and makes wallets thin.....grin.

If that kinda shooting doesn't make you grin, something is very wrong.

It's a hoot shooting stuff at 1000+, and surprising how consistent it can be with the right stuff. My 308 throwing 208s at 2620 fps amazes ME, at 1200. I recently had it out to a mile on a fairly calm day, and it was still very consistent, shooting at the base of a small juniper about 35" tall, on a dry hillside, all hit's very easy to see. Took 90 moa to get there. I was holding 20 mils, plus dialing 22 moa.

Good stuff.

Thats great. I have a feeling that he would be a great person to show someone how to get it done at long range.

Sounds like a blast!! I am very interested in checking out one of his rifles - would like to give it a run just as you did.

Sounds like great fun. I wish you luck in killing something besides rocks as well.

Bob, if you are able, I'd be interested in the particulars of that .264 load. PM would be preferable, thanks.

Guys we were impressed! Those 140 Bergers were smacking those rocks with authority!

We started at 1200 yards, so 880 seemed easy! grin

It was wierd holding 6 minutes into the wind, with the center of the reticle way out to the right, and watching those bullets smack in center. We were correcting for a 10 moh wind, and it semed to hold pretty consistent for us.

John, btw is a very good guy and lots of fun as well....we all had a lot of laughs.

Later the three of us were together when we spotted 3 bull elk and 3 cows on a hillside about 1200 yards away;my pal has a cow tag and we were laughing at how we wished we had John's 264 with us.. smile

..been a lot of fun so far here in Wyoming. I guided my buddy to a real nice buck antelope this morning;one shot at 330 yards did it with a 140 TSX from a 280 Remington.

264's ROCK!LOL!

Oregon: Yes the rifle was one of the GB rifles, but with McMillan action and Jewel trigger. The stock is very comfy to shoot and settled on target well.None of us had any problems shooting it.

Shane yes, I can see how it can get pretty expensive....and addictive as well. grin

Bob, I'm very disappointed in you. Don't you know how easy it is to gut shoot a rock at that distance? smirk

Clearly your a unethical rock hunter. You owe it to the rocks to get closer. Remember to use enough gun. I dont think a .264 is enough gun for hunting rocks in wyoming. They are a lot tougher than those eastern rocks you know. You need a .308 at least for wyoming rocks. whistle

I have to dissagree - us long range rockstars LOVE the .264 up here in Alberta! I have pouned my smallest rock at more than 1,000 with a 6.5WSM wildcat .
My biggest was at a range unmeasurable by modern standards !
You must realize however, that if one was to get close, then irons would be applicable! >:)

On my first trip to Colorado in 1961 the party I was with tried rock shooting. We were on the side of a mountain taking a break and looking at rocks on the side of another mountain.

This was in the days before range finders and I don't have any idea how far the rocks were, but we got good enough that it was no fun shooting at close rocks.

On the distant rocks, we would spot for each other and make a guess for sight correction. Actually, hold over or hold left or right.

One of the most fun shooting sessions I have even had.
