With a 3 year old and 1 year old it is difficult for us to get out hunting together. Friday I took off work early and we drove north to some friends' home. Our plan was to hunt Saturday but arriving early let us take a nice walk in our street clothes before dark. Our friends watched our two kids while we took a walk around the ~40 acres he has access to around his home. We spotted a small deer in the timber but my wife couldn't get a shot on it before it decided it didn't want to play. We worked through the timber and into the pastures and spotted this doe.

We came out at the point of timber in the upper right of the picture. I set up the shooting sticks and my wife made a perfect shot at 190 yards using my 223 loaded with a 53 grain TSX. The doe was slightly quartering away and the bullet went in behind the close shoulder and out the point of the far shoulder. The doe mule kicked at the shot, took ~5 steps, and piled up. This was my first time seeing the effects of the 223 on deer and I'm now a believer. The doe went down quicker than I've seen others go down shot with bigger stuff.
Now I can look for one with antlers with meat in the freezer.

Amazing what a stout little bullet will do. Like you, I would probably have been a naysayer until I tried it and then I became a believer real fast in the stunt calibers pushing deer-type bullets.

Congrats to the wife on a nice shot and whats sure to be a great tasting animal.

Excellent and my favorite type hunt, relaxed and uncomplicated.

Nice to add another 'stunt' shooter to the fold.

Think the 223,22hp, 22 hornet are good because of thier speed not as fast as 22-250 or the 220 swift

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH look!!!!!!!!!!! Another one gets it. Put the bullet where it belongs and the animal dies. Congratulations Kaleb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nimrod1949. It's wonderful to see a husband and wife hunt together.

Nimrod, whats the stats on the rifle your wife used on the doe? Looks like a 700 but hard to tell in the pic...

Yes, they do. I wish VA would get around to legalizing CF .22s for deer.

Looks to be a nice mature doe for sure. I don't know about stunt shooter but at 190 yards looks like she can shoot.

Congrats to your wife.

LBP - it is a youth Rem 700 I stuck in an adult stock until my kiddos are old enough to take it over grin

firearms44 'stunt shooter' is just a TIC campfire joke about her using a 223 for deer
Thanks!

My first post on the campfire and no better way to start than congratulating a successful husband/wife hunting duo.

My wife has hunted a few days with me every year since our second anniversary and of all the hunting trips I go on in a course of the year, the days with her are my favorite. Now that our kids are starting to hunt to it is even better, a real family affair....BEST OF CONTINUED SUCCESS to you guys.

Are the legs on that doe white? Or is it just how the pic took?
