It was one of the coldest mornings we've had. Felt guilty about skipping church, but I rested on Saturday...grin. I worship 7 days a week and will never be a legalist. Was hunting a new spot so I came in at first light. I was seeing trails to the right and left of the road I was walking. There were streams to my left and to my right, Oak trees in abundance in all diretions. I climbed a fat poplar 13-15 feet and had a great view out +/-100 yds. Didn't know it until later, about 10 feet behind me was a fresh massive scrape and rubs everywhere out in near where he came out. He came up on the road at the farthest end of where I could see. He swung around to the left..and then back my way. I felt like I was watching Texas hunting on TV...all I noticed was the flat mass stretching past the ears. I eased up the rifle as he looked to his rear and then back toward me. Eased into the shot, like I'd practiced a thousand times before. The breath, the release, the soft squeeze must have come naturally, finally!!! I don't remember thinking much of it through.

I love my remingtons and this .338 is bees knees. Shoots dang accurate and pushes like a best friend. I only remember listening for the crash, couldn't have come fast enough. This one bled over about 5o yds. The deer must have winded me and took a step toward me the moment I squeezed. I had aimed for the top of his right shoulder. The bullet entered just below the neck at front and exited just behind the left shoulder and low. Perfect! No meat damage....John if your reading...I didn't get kiss but I didn't give the deer away either...grin.

Followed a trail that looked like someone had shaken and spewed red Champagne...unbelievable trail. Best Ever!!!

I used a 200 grain Hornady SST.... Can't complain.
Handload....IMR 4831 70 grains I think.
Roughly 2700 fps.

I've been reading here for almost 10 years, started hunting at 23 learned alot from my uncle in Mississippi and quite a bit here. I always considered myself a meat hunter, suspect I always will, but now I understand what all the fuss is about. Around here I've had my 15 minutes....this is a big one for these parts.

Good hunting ya'll
David

Congrats from out west! Your daughter is a real cutie patootie! (I've got four myself--nothing like having a little girl come running and thinking you're a stud for bringing something home in the bed of the truck!)

Tell me about the critters behind her.

Waders,

What's up man!! Yeah, that's Daddy's Little Girl. I never could have imagined what being a father would do to my soul, I'm thankful I waited as long as I did, I was pretty careless in my 20s. I've heard it said that, the wealth of the poor are their children. No argument here on the validity of that, I feel wealthy beyond measure with 2 children, but can't deny they make me broke as hell. LOVE IT> I admire the fact that you have four daughters. You are indeed blessed and very rich my friend.

No story, per say, in regard to the "bodies" in the rear, a fellow from Dallas NC dropped them off for processing. One was a 6 the other a 4 pnt. He pulled in just after I did.

Steelhead,

I know it looks funny, but can't say it's too far different from hunting with a bright yellow rifle, or say, a pink one. Hunting preferences don't have to make sense, just be fun.

I will say this, I shot the gun alot last year, off hand, from prone and sitting positions. I'm very confident with it. There's no question I could make do with less,a lot less!! but why would I want to? It's a really fun cartridge.
