WTF? I just got back from my local gun shop where I went to order a Model Seven in 7mm-08 for my son as a Christmas gift. This will be his first "deer rifle". The owner immediately says that they don't make them anymore. At first I thought he meant the M7, then he clarified that he was rerring only to the 7mm-08 cartridge.

Sure enough, he gets out his "book", and the 7mm-08 is no longer listed as an available cartridge. He accessed several of his suppliers' inventory through his computer, and he was able to find one "old stock" 7mm-08 listed as being available.

I just checked Remington's website, and they still show the 7mm-08 as being offered. However, I've learned lately that their website is reliably NOT up-to-date.

Why would Remington discontinue the Model Seven in 7mm-08? It just seems like this particular rifle and cartridge were almost made for each other.

If the one remaining 7mm-08 doesn't come through for me, I will need to decide between the .260 Rem and .308 Win.

Order up a Howa youth 2-4-1 in 7-08. Local Gander Mt. has one. Makes me lose focus and dream of it at my house.

Comes with youth and adult stock. Ultra light action (milled for lightness over standard action), short barrel of light contour, real bottom metal not that crap from big R. Price is $499 at Gander.

If I didn't have the wifes medical bills to pay off I'd own this puppy.

Spec sheet on the Remington web site shows the 22" bbl CDL being discontinued. Still shows the 20" bbl available. Different catalog numbers. Would be very, very surprised if Rem dropped the 7 08 in the model 7.

I own three M7's and wish that they were model 700's merely because you have way more choices in aftermarket goodies..

shootem,

I checked their website too. However, in my experience, this wouldn't be the first time that their website wasn't accurate.

The gun shop owner immediately stated that the 7-08 was no longer being offered, as if he had known this for sure. I don't know exactly what "book" he showed me, but it was some type of thick dealer's catalog, and the 7-08 was not listed at all.

I already purchased a M7 synthetic youth stock from a 24 Hour member here at a fantastic price - more like a charitable donation. It was a tough decision with all of the good options available (like the Howa), but I've pretty much decided on the M7, especially because I already have the youth stock.

So ... you're going to get the 7-08 that the other store has in stock, yes?

If you can't get it, my vote goes to the 308. It does very well in 20" barrels and the recoil between it's 150-gr. bullets and the 7-08's 140-gr. pills isn't noticeable. When my youngest son was 11, he had the choice between two bolt guns, a 7-08 and a 308. He took some time firing both and decided that he liked the 308 better. Thought it kicked less, too.

I think your dealer is mistaken.....I would be shocked if they dicontinued one of their most popular proprietary calibers in a rifle seemingly made for it. The current paper catalog shows it, the online catalog shows it.....send an email to Remington and ask them.

in any event, even if they are discontinued ... you're only a barrel swap away from having a 7mm-08, or any other chambering that uses the standard size bolt face ...

Big Green does funny things...

A M7 in 7-08 was my 2nd big game rifle. Great package to be sure.

Do look carefully up at the barrel channel/barrel area for wierd sideways pressure. Mine was a mess up front, as were a few other laminate and wood stocked ones I looked at. Looked like a crooked-tooling issue; the rifle was literally crooked in the stock. But that was 10 years ago.

I called Remington today, but their offices are closed for the weekend. I also sent an email, but I am hoping that they are not swamped (no pun intended, Swampy) with emails because of the M700 controversy that has been in the news recently. I'll let everyone know what the story is if they reply.

The dealer's supplier may not be stocking the M7 7/08 but I dont believe they quit making it.

I once had a dealer tell me Ruger wasnt making Hawkeyes in 35 Whelen. Went to a different dealer and shazam I had a 35 Whelen Hawkeye on the way.

My guess is that Remington is going to discontinue the Model Seven sometime in the near future...

The stainless/synthetic version (that was probably one of the best out of the box hunting rifles made) is gone. All that is left is the Model Seven Predator, CDL and and one Custom Shop offering, the full stock MS. Even the excellent KS is gone as are the AWRs.

If you are looking for a CDL in 7-08 the wholesaler Jerry's Sports Center has 8 in their inventory as of 10 minutes ago...they even have 5 left in .260 Remington.

As to why/if it was discontinued...if sales are any indication, at least around here, if two guns in .308 and 7-08 are sitting on the shelf the .308 won't last a week but the 7-08 will be there several months. In the big shops I go to in New England there are always plenty of used 7-08s and almost no .308s or .243s...

Remington discontinued the Model 7 Youth a couple of years ago. It was the finest rifle ever made for small statured hunters, including women. Guess Remington figured the Model 700 Youth would work just as well, but the balance is just not there.

I just heard back from Remington. They say that the M7 in 7mm-08 is NOT being discontinued.

Here is their reply:

Please view the link below as it will ensure you that we are still offering our Model Seven CDL in 7mm-08.

I guess I'll take this up with my local gun shop. I don't want to come off as an arrogant azzhole with him, but he has been misinformed by somebody.

Sorry if I caused any confusion.

All you have to do is look at the stupid moves that Remington makes on a regular basis and you know that they need a GPS to find their collective butts with 2 hands and their eyes closed. Any company that drops the LVSF format before it has a chance to succeed is obviously employing marketing people who are clueless.

Remington succeeds despite the morons that they employ in their sale, marketing, and product developement departments.
