Those two holes are factory. A Lyman 66 bolts right up.

Just paid $1500 on mine without deluxe wood a week ago and happy to do it. Bolt Peep raises the value about $300 over other models, short tang is not a value adder as most like the long tang, which is what mine is. Bluing looks good. The two peep sight holes on the left side seem odd to me for a bolt peep gun and make me think the bolt peep was added afterwards or that the holes for the Lyman were. Winchester didn't make a habit of drilling for a peep sight when they were including it on the rifle. The amount of milling that is required for the bolt, peep and firing pin is immense. Either way, $1500 is a good price and you won't get hurt at all. Ryan

17xxx put's it around 1940.Winchester didn't drill for receiver sight's on 94's till 1952.I think 71's would be the same. Are the hole threads blued?

It's a deal, besides the other things pointed out by everbody else, the sling swivels are with it also .Generally they are missing and fetch upwards of a couple of hundred bucks by themselves at gunshows, if you can find them!!!
This rifle wouldn't have made it to a gunshow table in my neck of the woods, someone would have bought it outside, coming to the door, at that price first!!
I've owned a couple of bolt peep models that were drilled for lyman peeps around the same vintage as this one (1939-40), the bolt peeps developed a reputation for being easy to break and parts for them are scarce.
Nice Find !!!!

Some snake oil would probably make that stock look a lot better.

On very (very)rare occasion I have seen a M71 for sale in .45-70 or .33 WCF. These were special orders of course and probably the smallest of handfuls made of each. Now I suppose I'll hear that Don and his brother have several of them wink The best one to find of the standard offerings is the early (long tang) variation with deluxe checkered wood, sling swivels, bolt peep and in the short barreled (20 inch)version. One of these in top condition brings a very pretty penny and is considered darn collectable. But Don is right of course, lots of people like these guns.

Don - I'm wagering that your deluxe .348 short rifle is not seeing much use up in a deerstand wink? I have seven .33's here (between Win. 1886's and Marlin 1895's) and I sure would like one in a M71. Yup, sure would like one smile

Even if it was a M71 of which only a couple were made in .33?

A 71 WIN. in 33 cal.thats factory will cost a lot of cash!!!
There was a few 71's done over to .450 Alaskan, they would take
a 500 gr. lead in a blown up 348 shell,kick your ass!!!

I know I would trade most any very special Savage I have for an original Winchester M71 chambered in .33 WCF. I've never wanted a .450 Alaskan. I seem to recall that a lot of forearms died a brutal death on the .450 conversions.
