Allen,

Could you share some of your experiences with the 500? What bullets are you shooting, how fast, how accurate? Have you tried any cast bullets in it, reduced loads?

Word is the 500 Jeffrey is making some progress, action was trued this week, barrel will be fit next week.

Well Paul as you know it is built on a CZ550 Magnum action. Has a 24" barrel and a Laminated Walnut stock. 2 1" diameter 4" long pieces of copper tube filled with lead in the butt stock.

Right now I have not yet chronographed it. Sort of got side tracked when I started on the 480 Ruger stuff. At the moment I am loading the 535 grain Woodlieghs under 127 grains of IMR4350. Will put five into 2" or less at 75 yards from the offhand position. Rifle really fits well when brought to the shoulder. The Point Blank Ballistics program says it is generating about 97 ft. pounds of recoil. Will start back to work on it very shortly. Hope to get the 535's too 2450 and then start working on the 570 grain Woodlieghs. Want to find a load that will put both on the money at 75 yards.

Just put some Warne QR rings and a Leupold 1.5X5 Vari X III on it.

Allen,

Glad to hear about it. I should be getting the 500 Jeffrey in the next few weeks. I have a beater stock I'll use temporarily, and not sure exactly what type of stock I'll use, and when I'll get to stocking it, might put that off til next winter.

I'll have to pick up some Woodleighs, as they seem to be the bullet.

Allen, Paul... do any of your 500's have an extended magazine? Where does one find a relatively low cost "thingy" for a Mauser? ~~~Suluuq

Suluuq,

I'll be extending the magazene on mine, but it's being built on a P-14 enfield.

The only affordable way to extend the magazene on a mauser is to cut off the front with a hacksaw, bend some 1/16" sheet metal, weld in place, and open up the feed ramp on the rifle to match with a dremel tool.

I had to that on the 35 whelen ackley (as I recall about 1/8" forward), and now that I'm near set to re-chamber to a 350 Rigby, will have to extend it further, and likely rearwords as well, as there is only so far you can go to the front before you remove too much metal behind the bottom lug recess.

If you're interested, maybe we can work out a trade on a modified magazene for some ivory work? I'll see if I can dig up a magazene box in town for a reasonable price.
Paul... I think I may have spoke with confusing words, I meant to say to extend the magazine downwards, to hold one or two extra rounds. Sorry about this.
I suppose we could trade for something, e-mail me. ~~~Suluuq

Suluuq,

My confusion, what you are talking about is a drop box magazene. I was a bit confused perhaps as when I built my 35 whelen ackley, I had to extend the magazene to fit the rounds when I seated them out to where they shoot.

The easiest wayt to extend capacity would be to weld an extension to the top of the magazene. That said, you'd have to make the stock from a blank, as the bottom metal would stick out, and might look a bit odd.

With the 375 whelen, you should fit 5 in the magazene, if its an ackley, you'll loose one round.
