I recently inherited a model 600 rem and heard there was a recall and checked out the remington website on it.
My serial number is low at 5XXX and it didn't have the "A" serial number or the "V" stamped for 1979 update. The bolt also stays closed when its on safe so it should be updated...

Anyone do the update and what was your experience? Did the trigger come back better or worse? Big risk if I don't fix it?

Seriously, the last thing I'd do is mess around with an older Remington that works fine by giving it to the dorks who run it now to screw with.

If you're worried about it, sell it or decide after some answers here.

I own several Remington 600's and have never had one fire after flipping off the safety.
And I have tried everything I know how to fake it out to cause such a thing.
It is absolutely true this has happened on certain Remington 600's and 700's but in my opinion it's pretty rare.

One of the Remington models, if what I read was correct, had about a 50% incident rate of rifles that were prone to fire on release with the Walker trigger group. I think the 600 was the one. For the 700's the rate was much less.

I wouldn't mess with it. I wish I had a few of the older triggers.

I haven't had time to research it, but if i decided to do the update, does a person have to send it in or take it to a remington warranty gunsmith? I know one of those guys I trust more than mailing my rifle away.
I figure there are a lot of 700 owners that have done this too since it has a similar recall.

I dont believe the 600's had a 50% rate at all.
As I said I own several and none have done this.
I know of others that have owned them and never had this issue occur.
I have read on other forums of this happening to two or three others though.
Last,a very large gun dealer here had a warehouse full of them back in the 70's and the guys from Remington only found a couple that had this defect.
I will say that if you do send it back to Remington be prepared to have a trigger with an eight pound pull for ever more.

I have been around a couple dozen 600s (owning most of them) and have yet to run across a defective trigger. If the weight is set at 3 pounds or more, you're fine. If you are worried and just do not want to "take the chance" DO NOT SEND IT REMINGTON. You will get an 8 pound, creepy trigger. Just buy a Timney or Rifle Basix trigger. You will have a great trigger that can be adjusted easily.
