Guy's, I've got a 6mm remington built on a pre-64 action. The barrel is some sort of custom stainless, the only mark on it (other than the chambering)is a cloverleaf. The barrel is a 1-9 twist. I would like set this gun up for a long range deer/varmit rifle. Is a 6mm remington capable of 500-600 yard kills on deer? If so what bullets?

Very capable. I would shoot the 105 berger but that is just me. I am sure there are several great bullet choices out there. In the end it is all going to boil down to what your barrel likes.

I tried 105 bergers, they wouldn't shoot. I would assume that a 105 a-max would be a no go if it won't shoot the bergers. Anyone ever try the 95 grain bergers?

Berger has a new 85gr VLD in 6mm that should be good for 9 or 10 twist barrels.

The A-max should perform in a 1-9 twist. They did in mine.

I'd be in 105 A-Max Mode and you are there,with a 9"...................

An Amax from around 300 yds + is good, close up, it will blow on anything substantial, though a lung hit would mean QUICK death, as a head/neck shot.

I'd seriously look at slinging 95 Ballistic tips and call her good. My Dakota 6BR that I had used a 10 twist, and shot 5/8" w/o load work. Killed two deer last year very dead.

I really like it for an all around bullet. Barnes are great, but the higher bc and weight of the 95 may give better impact and expansion IMHO at LONG distances, so it depends on application. To 300-400 yds I'd not worry w/Barnes 80/85's. Both outstanding bullets in the 6mm.

FWIW, I dropped my furthest deer right at 400 yds, using a 6mm BR 8 twist, at 2850 MV. Double lunged, golf ball sized exit, dead w/in 25 yds. Saw the hit and the deer almost went down on impact, residual there was just over 1K lbs.

The 105 kills stuff very dead at 3400fps+ impact velocities.

Thanks guys, looks like I'll start with the a-max and 95 berger. I pulled the gun out last night and looked at the barrel markings again. In addition to the cloverleaf mark, there are the letters M.A.C. stamped below it. Any ideas on the barrel maker?

I'd run a patch through it,to determine twist rate...then score some '22 and some 105's................

I already patched it, she's a 9. The a-maxs are on the way, already have the 22 covered. My 338rum eats it by the pound.

I have killed a bunch of deer with the 6mm and the longest was around 400 yards. The 6mm Remington has been my favorite 24 and i haven't been without one since 1971. My favorite load and the most accurate in my present 6mm is the Hornady 87 gr BTHP and Win 760. Past 400 yard the Berger would be the way to go or the 90 gr Swift Scirocco.

Saw 3 Bucks killed last Season,in 3 pokes,ala 243AI/105A-Max and the nearest was 1005yds.

The 105A-Max rates having a rifle built around it.

Hint...................

I forgot to add my Shilen barrel on my 6mm is the 1&12 twist and i had .244 stamped on the barrel . I built this rifle mostly for varmint hunting, but the Hornady 87 gr BTHP works great on Whitetail. Here in this part of TN & VA shots over 400 yards are rare and most come at 200 yards and under . Just not many place you see deer over 400 yards to many woods for that distant and big open fields the deer are just to smart to hang out in them.

Moments before my 400 yd kill, I dropped another w/a spine shot at 200 yds. Remember, my 6 BR had an MV of 2,850.

The bullet VAPORIZED w/in 1-2" - User beware the 105 Amax will not penetrate much @ high impact fps.

My 6mm AI is 1-10" and will spin the 105.

Much prefer the 243AI to it and 9" to boot.................

I'm more than a whole bunch comfy with the 105 and it's terminal affects...............
