I was at a friends GS, he has a savage 240 410 ga both barrels, it is the first I have ever seen it has double hammers and double triggers. and is in excellant condition. has anyone else seen that setup.

Yes. I've even seen older 242s with tenite plastic stocks.

Never seen a 240, I'm guessing it's a SXS if it's got double hammers.

Yeah, I like .410s and Savages, so I looked at the 242 when they were briefly re-introduced in the 1970s (???). But the two hammers and two triggers looked like it would take a LOT of getting used to in the field, so I got a nice used 220B .410 instead, and later fitted an old 219 .25-20 barrel to it. Still think it was the right thing to do.

But the 240 IS interesting!

I'm missing something here, how can you have double hammers on a 242? It's an O/U! I know my 242 only has one hammer with a selector switch on it.

Yep, found one for sale, I guess that explains it. Never seen an O/U with double hammers before, gonna keep an eye out for one of these but I can't imagine they're to common huh?

I found 3 stevens 240 which is the same thing , I will have to take another look at my friends to make sure it is a savage.

You're right Dog; I was thinking of the earlier model. The 242 has one hammer only, with a selector like a late-model 24. I guess my concern was with the mechanics of cocking the hammer for the second shot AND remembering to switch the selector. Most of the stuff I shoot with a .410 is FAST!

I thought the same thing the first time I saw the 242. Once you've seen a Stevens model 240 with the double trigger & double hammer setup the much later Savage model 242 doesn't make sense and appears to be a "wan-a-be" Stevens 240.

I have a 240 (I'll confess that I've never fired it) I paid $375 for it at a gun auction. Three weeks later I watched another one in similar condition sell for $1300 at a farm estate auction. Everybody else including me) had dropped out of the bidding by $800 but these two guys just kept going....I'd love to have heard the story behind it. I didn't bring anything home from that auction but it was almost worth the 6 hour round-trip drive to watch that gun sell. It certainly made me feel good about the one I had recently purchased. That was probably five or six years ago and I have not seen one sell since.

My Pop had one, pre-war. I traded it for a 1911 Colt, and I still think I got the better end of the deal. They are interesting curios and I wouldn't mind another one just for the oddness factor, but they had less than optimal balance shall we say and manipulating the two nesting hammers is indeed tricky, especially with cold numb thumbs. I can think of a slew of better shotguns for birds/rabbits but they are definitely interesting.
