I have a 35 Whelen and a 350 Rem Mag on the way. What Bullet would you guys recommend. I have a few Hornady 200 gr. Spire Points and was going to try that first.

i also at one time owned both of those calibers when i lived in pa, the ones i liked the most were the hornady 200gr spire points in the whelen for deer and the 200gr hornady round nose in both of them for black bear hunting and the .350 was very partial to the 180gr hornady spire points, but i had a hard time finding them and i heard a rumor lately that they have been discontinued. pm me if you want some load data for one or both,

I have been shooting the 225gr Woodleigh Weldcore RN SN in my .350 mag. I bought a bunch when I found a good deal on them. They are very accurate in my Rem Custom Shop Mod 7 KS. I use 60gr of R15 with a mag primer. Lotsa fun killing hogs and deer with that load. Never recovered a bullet. Recommended impact velocity per Woodleigh is 1800-2500 fps. My MV is is ~2600 fps. Be cautious with this charge, work up, yada, yada..

For my 35 Whelen AI, I use Sierra 225 GK and Hornady 250 Interlock. My favorite is the Sierra over Re-15. Enjoy.

The 250 grain Horndaddy SP with Re15 is an unbeatable combo for elk and anything else in my Whelen.

Both the 250 grain Speer Hot Core and the Hornady 250 spire point are reliable performers in the Whelen.

The sierra 225gr SBT and the 250gr hornady RN where by far my fovorite bullets for the whelen. The 250gr speer is another good one but not quite as tough as the hornady.

So far I've only used two bullets in my 35 Whelens. The 200 gr. Hornady SP and 225 gr. Barnes TSX. For me the Hornadys have been outstanding on deer. I've not recovered one yet and they hammer deer. I've used the TSX on a black bear that went over 300 lbs. Shot head on in the chest the bear dropped on the spot. The bullet was recovered perfectly expanded sticking out the back of the right hindquarter. Those two bullets are all that I'll need but I have a good supply of the 225 gr. Nosler BTs that I'm going to try.

For those critters I would go with the Sierra as mentioned above or the Hornady. Inexpensive and plenty of bullet.

I have one recovered 350 Mag. driven 200 grain Hornady from a 200ish lb. boar hog. It retained about 150 grains after passing through both shoulder plates & coming to rest just under the hide on the offside. DRT.

This should be plenty of mojo for about any deer or black bear. The recoil is sure a lot milder than the 250 grain Partition loads, though larger bears would likely push me towards the 250s.

I've only used 225 gr. Barnes TSX at the range in my 35 Whelen and they were very accurate. Have not used the 35 to hunt yet but if they work as well as the TSX's have in my other guns they will be a great deer\bear round.

I have been shooting the 225 gr Accubonds out of my 358. Dropped the only deer I have shot with it in its tracks. The Accubond has about the best BC of the 35 cal bullets.

I shot a buck last year with a 200gr Hornady using my 35 Whelen. The shot was from about 15 feet. No exit, total destruction to the boiler room and the bullet. The core seperated, but did not exit. The jacket is still on the dash of my truck. I should post a pic but am sitting on my lazy butt.

I switched to the 200Gr TSX this year. I have not shot a thing but steel at 600 yards. I recovered one that hit my 600 yard gong and it was impressive looking.

Strangely enough the 225 partition has a better BC than the 225 accubond, that is if you believe Nosler. I do admit that the accubond looks like its going a 1000 mph and the partition is standing still.

I've never killed a bear with the Whelen, but deer have died due to the whelen. I use the 200Gr Hornady RN and get 2600fps. The bullets work well with no blow-ups and hammer deer hard. I would think they would work for average sized Blackies. The best compromise might be the 225 Sierra or the 220gr Speer FP [if you can find anymore]

The Sierra 225gr. in my .35 Whelan sure put the hurt on my bear this year. The shot was at about ten yards slightly below me in a creekbed. The bullet went in about 1/4 way from the top of his back around his last rib and came out low on his off side shoulder. I never found the bullet, but the bear only went about five yards.

I have used the 200 grain core-lokts for whitetail and have some 200 barnes x bullets loaded for elk.
If you are wanting a bullet for varmints and want to poof a coyote or two use a 190 grain pistol bullet, but not if you are keeping the hides.
I have tried the 225-250 grain bullets and decided that whitetail are not bullet proof.
Good Luck with your 35whelen and have fun finding what works best in your rifle.

In the .350 RM I've come to like the 220 Speer HotCore flat point...slams both deer and black bear to the ground. The flat point allows the bullet to be seated so that the bullet base is at the bottom of the case neck and still easily make the maximum 2.800" LOA to feed from a Remington short action.

Make up a dummy round for the .350 and send it to Lee for a custom Factory Crimp die...really works great.

Rich,

What are ya gonna thwack with those bad boys, and how far you plan on doing it?

If it's deer inside 200 yards, look no further than the the Hornady 200-gn Spire Point. That is a damn fine bullet.

It does, however, have a truly abysmal BC; so bad that it will blow around in the wind like nothing you've probably seen if you try to stretch the range out... BTDT. So if you plan on stretching the range a bit, or hunting things tougher than deer, the 225-grain Nosler Partition is a really, really good bullet. It has a BC essentially equal to the 225-Accubond (?), and has been very accurate for me. You can drop the 225-Sierra into the same load for practice (or at least, I can).

And finally I don't know if it's even available to reloaders but I killed a doe with a factory 200-gn Silvertip load out of my first .358 and DAMN, that thing made one of the most impressive wound "tunnels" I've seen so far! Wow.

The CENTER will hold.

As far as thwacking..........deer mostly. I bought more out want that practicality. Always wanted 1 350 Rem. Mag. Since the Model 7 CDL in 270 WSM fell into my hands I decided to get the 350!
