My first deer was killed with a 1948 vintage Ithaca model 37, 16 gauge, 28 inch barrel, no sights, Remington slug. Range was under ten yards. Heart was smashed, deer ran bout fifty feet. That was in 1965.

My first deer was a 4X3 whitetail, shot with a M94 30-30 and 170 grain Imperials at 40-50 yards. The second was the doe standing beside it, and the third shot was at the first buck when he got back up and moved toward me. The noise must have inspired the doe to greater effort so I had to put down again when it got up and moved away. The buck got up again and was subsequently flattened at about 20 yards. The doe, with one shot through the ribs and one through the shoulders pushed herself into the bush where I followed up and shot it again. This may be the only case of a 1894 going full auto, but I was still a few years away from shaveing and didn't appreciate the rarity of that event. I had a .270 real soon after that. Some of the caseing were still in the air. My first moose: .270 First mule-deer .270 First pronghorn .270 First elk 7mm STW First grizzly .338 Win First crap load of things .375 H&H
Life begins at 40. Recoil begins at "Over 40" Coincidence? I don't think so.

My first deer was killed with a Weatherby Vanguard 25-06. Not sure of the bullet, but I would guess 115 grain nosler partitions that my dad would have reloaded. Age 14.
My first Elk was taken with an Inline muzzleloader 100 grains of Pyrodex RS and can't remember the bullet weight, but they were called deerslayers. Age 15.

First deer 1979, 700 ADL 30-06, hunted with the same rifle until about 2004 when I bought a 7-08. Both kill deer about the same, 7-08 a lot easier on the shoulder. Going to give the 243 a try this year with 80 grain ttx.

First deer was a doe taken with a Marlin 336 (1977 vintage) in 30-30 using 150gr Winchester power points (I believe). I had borrowed it from the man that would become my father-in-law. He had never fired the rifle, and gave it to me after I shot the doe with it.
I'll never sell that gun.
