SPR contour (A step down from a H-BAR) Sabre Defence lower Timney trigger A.C.E. skeleton stock (I may switch to an A2) NightForce NSX 2-10X24 W/ Burris PEPR mount. I haven't shot it yet but I'm hoping for good things here. Terry

Since SPR's have been popular, here's mine. Noveske 1/7 SPR barrel, JP VTAC tube, Leupold 3.5-10 w/B&C reticle (good out to 400 yards with 77SMK's), SOPMOD stock, upgraded RRNM trigger. since black guns are evil...

17" RECCE, Kreiger 1/8 barrel, Troy TRX Battle rail, upgraded RRNM trigger, it now wears a SOPMOD stock again but need updated pics and a Leupold MK4 3.5-10 is on the way with M1 knobs. My light weights, 16" Colt 1/7 barrels, LaRue rails, Magpul CTR stocks, Leupold 1.5-5 scopes in LaRue mounts, (though the bottom now wears an Aimpoint Micro) Top one has an upgraded RRNM trigger, bottom one has a stock trigger for now anyway.

Colt light weight with the Aimpoint My squirrel gun, S&W M&P 22LR, sold both my 10/22's as this one took over. It now wears a Leupold 1.5-5 and is the funnest gun I've bought in a long time.

Rattle can job? Looks great! TWR reminded me of my S&W also.. Wow, love this thread already. Although there is some pricey schwag that might make my wallet thinner. Good ideas for setups and its always nice to see a variety of builds before you decide on what you want...

Little Red Riding Hood tried the SR-25 in .308; it was too heavy and kicked too hard. Then she tried the Lightweight Colt Carbine in 5.56; it was too light, and shot a wimpy little .22 But then she picked up the custom Recce 18" in 6.5 Grendel; it was JUST right

Updated family photo Anyone else? Looks like that stock and fore end match almsot perfectly on the mid left rifle. Going with different manufactureres for their version of FDE always just bugged me a big since its just a touch different here and there, but it looks almost spot on...

This Stag 6L has gone down the road but I'll still throw up a picture. The 'ol girl was a bit too heavy and I had to send her down the road. Need to stick with the lighter, faster handling ladies....

That's why I like pic threads, you can get an idea of what different cinfigurations are like.
The LMT SOPMOD does match the Troy TRX battle rail. The Magpul and Tango Down stuff is lighter. One reason to paint but I'll never paint another scope. I decided to put the MK4 on the SPR instead of the RECCE and had to strip it off the VX3. Took a can of Chemtool and lots of rubbing but it did come off.

I hear ya on the scope painting. I painted a VX-III 6.5-20x50 scope for a guy and it was kinda nerve wracking. Scopes are easily swapped and I'd hate to spend an evening much like you did

Specs on the builds? Approximate weights? What mount on the grendel? Thanks! The carbine: RRA lower JP Trigger DD upper BCM Bolt, etc PRI Big Latch JP Modular Handguard JP Gasblock Troy folding battlesights 16" Lilja drop in barrel (223 Wylde) Levang linear compensator MIAD grip UBR Stock SS 3-9 in a 20 MOA AADMOUNT The Grendel: RRA lower JP Trigger ASA Side Charger Upper Troy Extreme battle rail 24" LW heavy varmint contour barrel (6.5 CSS) MIAD grip PRS Stock Premier 3-15 in a 20 MOA AADMOUNT That's an old pic though it's currently wearing a 3.5-18 IOR in an AADMOUNT. Without optics or the bipods the carbine weighs 8 lbs 5 oz. It "feels" lighter though being short and handy and the barrel balances well with the stock. The Grendel is 10 lbs 6 oz bare as it isn't meant to be carried much, especially with 3 lbs of optics + bipod! But it's great for cheap, accurate practice 500-1100+ yds. I did thump a meat doe with it at 420 yds a while back, so it'll get the job done on non-steel targets as well.

Please excuse the thread drift but:
JonA, what loads have worked well in your Grendel?.............DJ I've had great luck with both the 140 A-Max and 140 Berger VLD on top of 26.5-27.5 TAC. You can get another ~50 fps or so with 27.5-28.5 AA2520 but TAC seems to burn cleaner, give slightly better accuracy, they say it's more temp insensitive (haven't tested myself) and I've got a ton of it and love how it meters (no weighing charges) so that's what I use. Around 27 grains is a nice mild load with either and extremely accurate. I did mess around with 123 SMK's on 29 grais of TAC and they did OK but the accuracy wasn't quite as good. I didn't try too hard as the 140's did so well it wasn't worth the effort. If I was going to do more hunting with it, I'd probably try 123 A-Max's or 130 Sciroccos for a bit "flatter" close range trajectory. But for what I do the 140's work great.

How about some M4A1s, M203s, SR25s and a few M24s thrown in for kicks. These were from my "office" not too long ago.: My personally owned favorites: The lightweight hunter: The precision rig:

Must not... be tempted... must resist... the dark side.
Oh, hell, maybe just one for coyote zappin'. Let's hear some recommendations, starting with the best "stock" models.

My Tactical 20 I put together several years ago. Upper by DTECH. The lower was my first build with an ACE stock and Timney trigger. It is like a laser out there on the PD fields. The is when it was out stretching it's legs last summer in northern Arizona. Best shot of the day was 380 yards. Greg

I've posted this pic elsewhere but it needs to go here also now that I've finished putting the second one together. One is 100% RRA and the other is RRA except for the stripped lower.

Here's mine. .223 20" Krieger 1 in 7.7" twist SS barrel, Daniel Defense 12.0 Lite Rail, A2 stock, Timney trigger and a US Optics 1.8-10X44 scope. It's a nice accurate rifle. 6.5 Grendel 18" Satern 1 in 8.75" twist SS barrel. Carbon 10" tube, ACE stock, RRA MN trigger and a Leupold MR/T 2-7X35 scope. I only have about 60 rounds down the barrel but it looks VERY promising. On it's last trip out 3 of the 4 groups I shot were sub MOA. I think this is the ultimate AR fun gun. It's a S&W 5.45X39. It's basicly bone stock except for the Troy rail and ACE stock. It wears a Burris 2-7X?? Fullfield Tactical scope and is just a hoot to play with It's reasonably accurate and cheap to shoot. I guess they do sorta look the same but they never seem to get old Terry

Some great looking rigs in here! Here's mine: It's a SPIKES 5.56. Upgrades: Muzzle Break is a PWFSC 5.56, SPIKES Free Float, R-Guns Nickel Boron BCG, CMC trigger, and that is the SPARC red dot. I already had the flashlight.. so why not? I'm probably going to swap it and the foregrip out for a bipod in the coming weeks.

How do you like it? Got a buddy who wanted to do a custom build but for the price I can get the 20" upper, I figure it might be good enough for him. I know you aren't going to win high-power matches with it, but what kind of accuracy are you getting from everyday ammo?

HAK, you might be surprised... my cousin has a varminter (24" barrel) that shoots 1/2" groups pretty routinely. Throw away their 2 stage trigger and it ain't a bad gun.

How do you like it? Got a buddy who wanted to do a custom build but for the price I can get the 20" upper, I figure it might be good enough for him. I know you aren't going to win high-power matches with it, but what kind of accuracy are you getting from everyday ammo? I shoot reloaded ammo in it, mostly SMK 69 with 25.5 varget loaded mag length 2.260 and get dime sized groups at 100 yds.It shoots my reloaded 55 grainers just as well too.The shot cycle on these is so smooth ,it's totally different than a 16"AR,hardly any recoil or muzzle flip.I actually like the 2 stage trigger in this one ,i adjusted it to get it to my liking and it's really nice.I will post up some group pics if i can find them.

Crow sniper, if you got one (trigger) that stays in adjustment then you got a decent trigger but most of them don't, including cuzz's.

My 20 Tactical. Upper done by Dtech with my first lower that I did using a Timney trigger. It is quite the PD shooter. Way out there the trajectory really works for the shooter. Greg

Very nice pics. I'd take pics of my kills but I would need a wide angle lens. Greg

Both began as 16" mid length guns, but have grown longer barrels since then: the 10 is the same lower I previously posted, but it just acquired a CMC trigger, Armalite SASS upper, and a Nightforce. The jury is till out on the paint on the scope The 15 is wearing a Armalite 20" heavy barrel and free float upper, that I installed, aAs well as a CNC trigger. It is scary accurate.

I guess you could say I've got the AR bug, as back in November of 2011, I had exactly zero ARs. Now I've got three of them complete and a fourth that's just missing a handful of parts. The 1st one is my daughter's. It's a Palmetto State lower that I assembled myself (1st one) with their lower parts kit. The stock is a Magpul MOE. Upper is a DPMS 1:9", 16", SS, heavy barrel in 223. She and I painted the stock, handguard, grip, and magazine using Krylon Fusion. I had ordered her a pink Hogue handguard and grip, but she wanted red instead, so like most women, she got what she wanted. Scope mount is a JP Enterprises unit with a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4. The second rifle I put together is a Scorpion Tactical lower, generic lower parts kit with a JP Enterprises triggger spring kit, which makes for a surprisingly nice trigger. Magpul MOE triggerguard and grip with a Magpul ACS stock in Foliage Green. The upper is built by White Oak with the 1:7" twist, 18" SPR contour barrel in 223 Wylde. Topped off with a LaRue mount and a 2.5-10x24 Nightforce NXS. Numero tres is a Scorpion Tactical lower with generic parts kit and a Timney trigger. It's got a Magpul MOE Plus grip, MOE stock, and MOE triggerguard. The upper is a 264LBC that I picked up second-hand, built by Specialized Dynamics with a 19.5", 1:8" twist, Lilja barrel, threaded 5/8-24, which should work nicely with the Thunder Beast 30P-1 I have on order. It's topped with a LaRue mount and a Mil-Spec Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50. I plan on launching 100gr TTSXs out of it at piggies.

Here is(was) my AR collection. I recently traded off the one on the left it's a Superior Lower, DPMS Sportical upper, Ace Socom adjustable stock, 20" Model1Sales 5.56 1 in 9 twist fluted barrel,DPMS BCG Daniel Defense LPK, Hogue FFT and Pistol grip, MAGPUL BUIS, EOTECH 512 (I kept that), Bennie Coolie Compensator. Shoots 1 MOA with pretty much every cheap range round I put through it. The one on the right is my build I just finished a few weeks ago. Dtech lower, Daniel Defense upper, YHM quad rail, DPMS BCG Blackstar 20" .223 NM 1 to 9 Twist stainless barrel, RRA 2 stage LPK, Magpul butt stock, DPMS pistol grip, JP Enterprises Muzzle break, Burris PEPR 30 MM scope mount, Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 30MM tube scope. Haven't shot it yet. Got a .22LR upper in the works as well as a 6.8 complete rifle. Here is a better pic of the AR I'm never getting rid of.

hunt_ak, neat paint job on your buddies rifle. You do realize that RRA scope mount is technically on bass ackwards, right?
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

A rare bird. In fact it is a collectors wet dream. I came across it in an armory I was in charge of overseas. It has been bouncing around a lot of third world countries for a long, long time.

Not the jacks.
Cottontails yes, but cottontails get a free pass. I won't shoot one unless I am going to eat one.

What many who are not familiar with how the creatures of the desert work are shocked to find out how quickly all the dead jacks are cleaned up. The badgers, hawks, owls, coyotes, etc make extremely short work of anything and everything. The very next day after we shot all those jacks, this was all that was left: Even the fur will get carted off to line the nests of critters. Not a thing gets wasted. I have done night time summer hunts down old desert two tracks, killing a dozen or so rabbits, leaving them in the road. Heading back down the same dirt two track an hour later and find that every single dead jack has been carted off. Pretty common. The high desert, AKA the sagebrush sea is chock full of animals most never see.

when I lived in Reno we had a blast shooting the running jacks. I had an SP1 at that time, I also had a blast with a smith and wesson 41. Wish I had that gun now.

As late as the 1930's southeast Kansas was full of Jacks. My Grandpa used to kill them by throwing his pliers. He'd always carry a pair of pliers in the front, chest pocket, of his bib overalls. Dad said Grandpa could grab those pliers and kill a jack several rows over chowing down on some corn plants. Jackrabbits are a terrible menace to agribusiness. They can ruin a field of corn in no time, supposedly. This is all secondhand info, because by the time I was born in 1961, or at least when I can remember from, the jacks were totally gone from here. Whether it was pliers-flinging-farmers or pesticides, I know not, but I suspect the latter. It doesn't really make any difference, because they pretty much had to be eradicated lest a person go broke farming. I've only rarely seen one in the wild. Many times I wish they were still around here, but it's not practical. Oh, and my family ate them. It was depression-era Kansas, they ate a variety of stuff...

Here is my latest. It's only been to the range three times now but so far I'm very impressed with it. It's a Colt that started life as a stock LE6720. New parts: Spikes Tactical L/W 18" SS fluted 1-8" twist SPR barrel VLTOR flash suppressor Troy TRX forend Geissele Hi-speed DMR trigger assorted Magpul bling parts A.C.E. ARFX stock American Defense mount Leupold 2.5-8 MR/T scope I really like this rifle. It's reasonably light at 6 1/2lbs (bare)and very accurate. It's easy to carry and comfortable to shoot. Out of all I have put together I think this one is my favorite so far. Terry

This is all secondhand info, because by the time I was born in 1961, or at least when I can remember from, the jacks were totally gone from here. A rancher I knew in the Hill Country of TX "barked" a jack rabbit's skull with a .22 hornet. Since it was stunned and not dead, he decided to keep it a while. He staked it in the front yard on a 20 foot string. Overnight, every piece of vegetation in that 20 foot radius was gone. He was certainly a believer in killing every jack he saw. They're a pretty prolific critter. I've eaten snowshoe hare, but not jack rabbits. Supposedly there is too high a risk of bubonic plague to mess with jacks. I have no idea if that is grounded in reality or not.

How's that SPR barrel shoot? Extremely well. So far I've only tried 69gn SMK's and Varget but it loves those. Most groups (when I didn't screw it up ) have been sub-MOA. Here is a little bit better picture of it. Terry

there is a number, and I thought it was under 10, that matched a cow on jacks...
IE 8 jacks can eat as much as a single cow or some such.....
I know most ranchers don't care for em.
I liked seeing em around here but they went away for some reason we never could figure other than fire ants. but then we would only have 1-2 of them generally on the place.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

According to Montana State University Extension it takes a whole lot more than 8 to equal the forage requirement of a cow (AUM). Blacktailed jackrabbits 62 and Whitetailed jackrabbits 48. This is based only on the dry matter forage requirements of each species. FWIW...
