-looking to replace the wood stock on a Var. 308 with a synthetic 98 mauser stock, how much work to fit?

No, they are not compatible. The CZ 550 308 is on their long action with a blocked magazine, or with a detachable magazine. The CZ 550 action will not fit in a Model 98 Mauser stock unless you really like using alot of bedding compound and dremel tool time.
