Ive got a new Ruger Hawkeye and some R19/R22 and Hornadys 165 SST.
Any light load data to share and start? Would like to obtain around 3000 f/s...
Thanks.

Should be easy to achieve your goal with either powder, tho' you will use a bit less of the RL 19 than 22 fro 3000fps. Check the Alliant website for good (reliable) data. I would start with 73 or 74 grains of RL22.

I worked up to 79 of Re 22 under a 165 when I had a 300 WM. That load went right at 3200 and shot sub 1". It wasn't too friendly on the shoulder in T-shirt weather.
If it were me and I wanted lighter loads, I'd try the 4350's first under a 165.
Good luck.

For a light reduced recoil load, Hodgdon suggests using 60% of the maximum load listed for H4895. For 165 grains they list the max load for H4895 as 59 grains and almost 3000 fps. So reduced recoil load would be about 35 grains.

My favorite rifle happens to be a 300 Win Mag, and I've tried quite a range of powders with it. It prefers the 4350s, I and H, especially IMR. It's consistently under 3/4" MOA w/ a good 180 grain bullet (really likes Nosler Ballistic Tips for pure accuracy) often holes touching with a max load of IMR 4350.

I;m not much of a magnum guy, as I don't have much need for it in my normal hunting.. however when the occasion arises, I focus on the word magnum...
in my 300 Wins, my load ( about current load data by the way.. so don't try this at home unless you know how to work up to it..) is 83 grains of H 1000 with a 200 grain Spitzer or a ( my favorite) a 220 grain RN or Nosler SMP.
the 220 grain won't break 3000 fps.. it chrono's between 2950 to 2975 fps, MV.
its a thumper.

RL-22 is my favorite powder for the 300 Win Mag but it's not the one I'd try for a reduced velocity, reduced recoil load. Two reasons, one is that I remember reading somewhere (might have even been M.D.) that RL-22 was a powder that often was most accurate at full pressures. 2nd is that since the weight of the powder charge figures into recoil, fewer grains of a quicker powder is going to kick less than more grains of a slower powder when driving bullets to the same velocities. Probably not much of a difference but something to think about.
I'd probably try 4350, RL-19 or similar for a 165 to 3000fps...................DJ

+1. Good advice.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Nosler #6 starts at 75 gr of R22 with a mv of 3110 max load is 79 gr with mv of 3290 these are compressed loads
R19 starts at 71 gr and mv of 2982 and max is 75 at mv of 3192 75 is also a compressed load

If I "only" wanted 3000 fps I would go to a faster powder with the 4350's in mind. In some rifles RL 19 will sometimes behave very much like RL22...

if you only want to get 3000 fps with a 165 why not just shoot an ol' 30'06... kills them just as dead...

If you want to cut recoil, use a faster powder. Here are a few loads to work up to from some of my manuals: 58.5 Varget for 2975 59.0 H4895 for 2977 64.0 of IMR-4064 for 2967
If your goal is to cut down on recoil then the less powder used does cut recoil. The above loads in an 8.5 lb rifle will have only around 20 lbs of recoil. Hope this helps!

Thanks. Betterspine, I have a question for you. I noticed you are from Argentina, is it difficult to own multiple firearms there? If so it would make sense to have 1 that could perform at multiple levels. Just curious :), Welcome to the forum!..................DJ

My rifle likes a stout load of IMR 4350 best, for both 180s and 165s. H4350 is good too; much better than H4831.
