In the NRA February 2011 magazine The American Rifleman there's an article on the new Remington R1 M1911. Sounds like a good basic entry-level M1911 for $699.

I do not have a Remington nor do I intend to buy one if for no other reason than I'm left-handed and already have a 1911.

Thought I'd let everybody know about it if you haven't read the article. People on here are always looking for an entry-level 1911.

They ain't made here are they? Are they made by the same outfit that made Charles Daley's and Rock Island's?

Hahaha, Remington never ceases to amaze me. How long can a company last just because of its name?

YES< made in the US in NY state at the remington factory. My understanding is that they did that and wanted to keep the price competitive with the foreign made ones.

I may be in the market for one then. I can always use another good basic .45 auto.

If that's the only problem that's an easy fix. I have a Colt Gold Cup that required a trip to the custom gun shop at a whole lot of money to work right. I still have a front sight canted to the right. Never noticed until a right hander shot it and complained about the canted front sight. I'm left handed so I never noticed it.

I think they're a nice firearm from little handling I did, personally like the 3-dot sights standard.

Between $598 & $548 locally. $150-200 leap for a new Kimber AND add another $150-ish if you want dots on your sights.

Our local shop/range has sold a # of them and have had no issues--granted, they're not targeted for a picky market, but they haven't had any returns that I've heard of.

I'm sorry to hear that the front sights have fallen off of some of them. Quite honestly, the sights are their greatest feature IMO. They're almost exact replicas of the old King-Tappan sights made popular in the mid-70's by Mel Tappan's book Survival Guns. They don't have the 100 yard bar on the front blade, but other than that they're almost identical. Great retro sights!

I guess Ive just come to expect too much out of a new gun like sights that dont fall out. I'll keep my Sigs and Hk's.

Gmoats: My local shop has also sold several of these Remington 45's and there have been NO issues with any of them to date.
I am no expert on nor do I have any extensive experience with 1911's but I have bought and sold many of them over the years.
I actually liked the Remington version myself.
My local shop is sold out of them right now.
I am constantly amazed though at the "strong" prices of even the more basic models of 1911's.
Kimbers are indeed strong retail sellers but on the second hand market they even more quickly disappear.
As soon as another Remington 1911 comes along I am going to CLOSELY examine the front sight - I am rather puzzled about the inference that the sights are falling off of them en masse???
