Will be ordering a new AR soon and trying to decide between 16" and 20" barrel lengths. Anyone with a mid length 16" gun ever shoot your loads through a chronograph to see how much velocity you are losing? I've really got my heart set on a 16" mid length gun for it's handiness. I am concerned however with velocity loss due to the short barrel. The concern here is not bullet drop as that is easily whipped via turrets, but rather enough starting velocity to maintain reliable bullet expansion at extended ranges with VLD's.........
I like to run 70gr Berger VLD's for coyotes and have found them to be very affective out of a 20" barreled .223 at around 2900 +fps.
Anybody have chrono results for 68,69,or 70gr VLD's out of a 16" AR that I can use to extrapolate maximum range for this bullet with reliable expansion? Pleeeeease!!!!!!!!!!

well didn't even remember I had this info but found it in my notes. 88 degrees, 29% humidity
20" Colt 1/7 twist Federal Gold Medal 69gr SMK = 2793 fps 5 shot average.
16" Colt 1/7 twist (carbine gas) same ammo same day = 2697 fps 5 shot average.
55 gr XM193 20" = 3275 fps
55 gr XM193 16" = 3169 fps
77 gr SMK reloads on a high humid day (ie. slow velocities)
16" Colt 1/7 = 2607 fps
17" Kreiger 1/8 = 2640 fps
18" Noveske 1/7 = 2671 fps
This same load will do 2700 to 2730 (in the 17 and 18" guns) on a normal day but was slow the day I chrono'd the 16" with the 17 and 18" guns.
Hope this helps.
