Found a savage model 19 training rifle at a local store, it looks like a springfield 1903 kind of. Has a buckhorn rear site on the barrel. I think it also has what i believe are original sling swivels? I believe it to have a refinished stock and the metal finish is pretty worn but the metal is good. It is missing the rear triggerguard screw and the butt plate, I do not believe the stock is cut because it is stamped with a number under the plate. It comes with the butt plate screws. I think its pretty cool, they are asking 300.00 which I think is too high, but I have not seen many available. I am looking for opinions on price and if any one has an idea how hard it is to find a buttplate or has a picture of one they could post or email to me.
Thanks So Much

Savage 1919 NRA.

Ask Rick99, he is sort of into Savage 22s.

There were several variation of the 1919 and 19 NRA's over the years. None of the NRA models had any provisions for a standard rear sight - if the buckhorn is dovetailed in, it's not original. Sling swivels were standard, the butt plate would have been metal on all versions as far as I know. I got a lot (well most) of my info on the early bolt guns from Rick99 so he should be able to add more. Sounds like the price is way to high - original peep sights will be around $100 and it sound like the gun might have some modifications so basically it sounds like an expensive shooter. Is it 22 Long Rifle or 22 Short? and what does the magazine look like?

As for availability - I just did a quick look on line and found 9, of various versions, for sale - looking at the asking prices for those maybe $300 isn't out of line - but you still would need the correct rear sight and butt plate.

The rear sight is attatchesd with screws, I believe it is long rifle. They have the magazine in back so i did not see it, I assume its the same one as in my model 23.

You state the stock is refinished and the metal finish is worn. $300.00 is a bit high. Keep your money in your poke and watch the auction sites. $350.00 will get you a good score of both the long stock or the after fat stock.

Gene,
I have one in 22 Short that I was told is rare when I bought the gun. Is that so? Mine is in great shape, a lucky find about 5 years ago.

Bruce; I have watched most online auctions for the last 6 or 7 years and have only seen one 1919 NRA in 22 Short - it had the first action design (pre-1923), have heard of a couple others, and one on a 1923 action.

I am curious about the magazine in yours - I have not found a 22 Short only magazine for the bolt actions and I doubt they made them like they did for the pump 22's. The 22 Short on the 1923 action did not have a magazine with it and by then Savage was starting to stamp the magazines just for 22 Long Rifle - makes me wonder what the original magazine would have been?

Gene

I just took these pictures a couple days ago - this seems to be a good place to post them - sights for the NRA's, I recently saw a sight with the base of a 15 that was taller like a 10, could be a transition, the parts look like they will interchange. The Lyman and Marbles mount on the wrist with wood screws.

GeneB, Thanks. I don't think we'll get a better look at the sights you have shown. The little cuts on your finger look a lot like 2 pound test line tyed on a wet rainy day.

The 19's were standard with a rear target sight but there is also a single hole on top and about 3" in front of the ejection port. This hole allowed the attachment of the rear sight that was used on the 1904 single shot rifle (don't remember the number). The same sight was standard on the 1922 Savage and attached to the barrel with a single screw. It would also require a shorter front sight.

I agree that the rifle sounds over priced.
