Found the cast. The factory chamber was probably 233 as well as Tannel's reamer, as it said .2335 all four ways I hit the cast with the caliper. I just wonder if maybe the tailstock was off on Ruger's machine.

Seafire: I don't experience stuff like that with any of my 223's either. AND, I don't experience stuff like that with any of my 5 Rifles in caliber 204 Ruger either! Back in early 2,004 I bought my first 204 Varmint Rifle - I was so impressed with it and the cartridges performance that I quickly bought another Varmint Rifle in preperation for the Prairie Dog season. I have been loading for these two 204 Rifles ever since and I have added three more Rifles to my 204 arsenal in the ensuing years. I have never had ONE neck split! Are you "lubricating" your case necks properly (enough?)? The ONLY brass that was available back in 2,004 was Hornady brass in the form of factory ammo. I bought some (a lot) of those factory cartridges and have been reloading them ever since. Zero brass fatalities. I do have 5 seperate sets of loading dies - each Rifle has its own set in other words. 3 of my die sets are Redding and two are R.C.B.S. I can not fathom what may be the cause of your necks splitting - other than my premonition you are not using enough case lube??? Best of luck figuring this one out. I also now use Winchester brass in a couple of my 204's - my loading notes shows I started using Winchester brass in September of 2,007 so I am not deep into the number of times the Winchester brass has been reloaded - but again NO split necks to date? Is there ANYTHING that has impressed you as yet with the 204 Ruger? Velocity? Accuracy? Lack of recoil? Flat trajectory? Red misting Ground Squirrels? Again best of luck getting this brass mortality issue under control. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Unlike Woodsmetal which swells upon cooling and cannot be removed from a gun chamber, Cerrosafe shrinks during the first 30 minutes of cooling and then at the end of an hour, is EXACTLY chamber size. At the end of 200 hours it will have expanded approximately .0025". This factor is well known by all toolmakers and they will take it into consideration when making dies or reamers or gauges from your cast - if you will tell them the cast is of Cerrosafe.
