In the 308 I really like the 150 Horn flat base and R15. And or Varget and either the 165 Horn or 165 Sierra HPBT.
Dober Hmm... Dober, would you use either of those (C&C 165's) on an elk? I'm sure the 165's would probably do the trick I guess.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I'm not loyal to just one brand. I'm shooting... 155gr Berger VLD's & 150gr Barnes TTSX Guess I'm lucky 'cause they both have killed deer for me.

Any weight from 150-168 will do what you want to do. As for what bullet I like Hornaday and Rem core-loc. Your rifle will tell you what it prefers.

Thank you guys. I was thinking in the 165 grain range myself. Maybe an Accubond or a Partition.

For deer-only, any Cup-n-Core works great. I always liked the Speer HotCore for whitetails.
For an all-around bullet, antelope to elk, I like 165/168's. The Partition or Accubond are great bullets if your rifle likes them. They're obviously not needed for stuff smaller than elk, but they certainly work! My 308 dotes on the 168 Ballisitc Tip and I'd not hesitate to use them on elk. Great bullet.
The 308 is a "bullet-friendly" cartridge IME.
Varget has become my go-to 308 Powder, replacing RL15. 165/8's are my go-to bullet weight.

150g Hornady Flat base with R#15, 748, IMR 4064, Varget...pick one for deer, trade out for a tripple shock for elk.
180g Hornady flat base is a whale of a tough bullet, tougher than the bt version.

Vic-I've yet to see a 30 cal that didn't like that bullet (165 Sie HPBT).

Dober My 308 likes them a lot. They've got a BC like a rock, but they shoot great!

Dober My 308 likes them a lot. They've got a BC like a rock, but they shoot great! It won't affect me much. I shot two deer last year with the .308, one at about 12 yards, and one at 50 yards. That's typically the ranges I encounter deer, but the occasional 100 to 200 yard shot will come up. 250 yards is the furthest I have shot one here in Virginia.

The rock effect doesn't really come into play till one goes from 400-500, out to 400 there's practically no diff but after 400 it begins to go a bit south. Not a big deal if running turrets, dotz can still worked with to 500 but it takes a bit more work.
I find it a heck of a bullet!

I'd use the 150gr. bullets. Sierra's flat base and Nosler's Partition. The Sierra for most stuff and the Nosler Partition for larger animals. I'm betting no sight adjustments will be necessary.

Dober I agree Mark. I'm happy however that my rifle shoots the 168 NBT into smaller groups than the Sierra... it's a great hunting bullet with a great BC too. Simplifies things with the dots out to 500 as the 308 isn't exactly a drag racer
