Mark me down for #32, been reading Mike for years, back when shooting times was a good Mag. I read his stuff on the old Mil. rifles but liked his old west stuff better! Have all his books!

I hope you both get better. Have you run out of blue tags yet? Like I said, we went to the gun show in Helena on Saturday and all he did was whine about how low his gun money pile had gotten. I reminded him of the blue tags and how they would relieve that economic slump. Mike just reminded me how easy credit was and how book sales are still progressing and that he didn't need me to buy those guns just yet. It really was better in the old days, when he needed money and had no credit, he would always call me with another bargain and I would end up with another gun to ad to my growing collection. That is how I got a Sako 6mm PPC serial number 20. Mike was needing more money to buy land adjacent to his to expand his shooting range, and this rifle was going to help do that. I had told him I wanted the rifle as I had a collection of Sako's and wanted that one. He didn't sell it to me for a period of time and I bought a 22 PPC instead. Now when he needed the money, I didn't need the Sako, so the bargaining power was all mine. Needless to say I still own that 6mm PPC and I got it at a great price. I guess Shrapnel should start writing things about Mike Venturino, there might be more than 32 readers out there...

Mike puts out a nice story. Good research and his wife takes good photos too. So I too wish Mike and Shrapnel a speedy recovery. Get out there guys! There are rifles that need shootin' and stories that need telling.

The last time I visited Mike's house, I was with Shrapnel. I was an impressionable young man of 20 something, and when Mike pulled a box or two of 270 bullets out of a shed for me to try in my handloads, I felt like I won the lottery.
He showed me the first Merwin and Hulbert I had ever seen, and started me well down a path of the well traveled gun lover. He was about as nice a guy I have met, and listening to him and Shrap jaw about cheating eachother out of one gun or another was pure entertainment. That was almost 15 years ago.
Where has the time gone?
I hope they enjoy their misery together and give eachother lots of hell for getting old and feeble. ;-)
Well wishes for both, for sure and for certain.

Mike seems to be the only author out there still giving decent tips on the art and magic of cast bullet making and shooting, at least in the magazines I read.

His writings have even made it to Alaska, I've got a couple of his books myself so make it an "even 33" readers. Here's hoping you both get better.

Mr. Venturino is always an interesting read. As for his health, that's what happens when you are a biscuit shy of 400 lbs.

Not to change the subject, but has anybody heard anything about John Taffin? I heard that he had a heart attack a couple of months ago.

I got an e-mail from John a couple weeks ago, and he seems to be doing OK.

Mike is a good writer but man there have to be some places he just can't get with a wash cloth. Have not seen him since one of the SHOT Shows where he was always with several people.
One would think it would be hard to shoot when you are that fat.

I dunno. Some of these fireplug shaped shooters do pretty well offhand. Seems they don't wobble as much as the svelte shooters.
At one time Mike lost quite a bit of weight. I wish him good health.

I've always liked his writings.. and his eclectic tastes..
not of offend the man... it has always bothered me that he was so overweight...
not for the reasons some may think... It bothered me, because he strikes me as a real good guy, and overweight can cause some serious health issues especially as he gets older.. and I don't want to see anything unhealthy happen to him...

When health issues plague someone, we look for things they have done to make it "their fault." Then we can happily go on thinking that we are safe...till they happen to us. And everyone else will figure out why it's "our fault."

And everyone else will figure out why it's "our fault." Exactly. No matter what happens to a fat guy everyone always assumes it's because he's fat that it happened. As if skinny people have no ailments.

MVs interests differ from mine in some areas, but I enjoy his writing. Actually, i enjoy any writer from whom I learn something. I enjoy his articles on WW2 weapons and casting. I wish him and John Taffin well and many more articles!

I have the misfortune of visiting with Mike nearly every day. He does have some health concerns, but he is seeing a heart specialist about it. We traveled to the Helena gun show and talked about guns, shooting and his latest book on WWII guns. He has it nearly completed, just a bunch of shooting left to chronograph and test loads.
I am recovering from shoulder surgery, he will be unable to shoot for awhile after his next doctor's visit, so the shooting may be done by a cripple, me or him. This could make for a very unique book. shrapnel you are famous in my book, enjoy reading about your exploits. I like mike's column particularly the recent ones on WWII toys. I have had that bug for quite a few years. Started collecting the things, U.S. at first, then switched over to other countries, then back in time. I can go back to about 1842 in the U.S. with the exception of one rifle. When you see Mike tell him he has a fan in arizona. Was loading .45colt today and have to make up some more of those shot shells he wrote an article about. might add I cast too and his stuff on that is pretty good too
