I bought a new bowsight today. It has only 3 pins. For hunting elk should I have the pins set at 20, 30, 40 or 15, 25, 35? I do not think I would take a shot past 40 yards so am leaning toward 15, 25, 35. Rufous.

I go with 20, 30, 40. Anything under 20 and your 20 yard pin is fine for most modern bows.

I have a 20,30,40,and 50 on mine. I like to practice at longer ranges to hone my skills a bit. I won't take a first shot at anything over 35 though. I thought I had to make a backup shot on my last bull. That 50 yard practice helped me connect dead on at 52 yards. It turned out to be unnecessary but if it had been it would have been very lethal.

I just ordered new sights. I'm trying out the Sidewinder LX by Cobra. I'll keep my older Cobra sights as a spare in case something happens in the field. When you pack in 12 miles on horses the nearest bow shop is long haul.

I go with the 20,30,40 as well... 40ish is my limit, for most situations. I'm also horrible at judging distance, so my Leica are never too far away...

I wouldnt know whats best for elk but for whitetails I use:

20 yards = Green
30 yards = Yellow
40 yards = Red

One thing I like about using 3 pins with different colors for each one is that its easy to know what pin Im looking at without moving my head or the sight.

Mine are 20-yellow 30-red 40-green 50-red. I think that is a more accurate color combination.

Just kidding. It's how the pins came in the sight.

Hey gang,

I go with 20, 40, 60. I used to use just a 30 and 60.

I shoot Carbon arrows with a 100 grain head. My bow is set at 70 pounds and is flat .
I feel that if your bow is fast, flat and accurrate. You can do a set up like mine. The problem I was having when I went to carbons, was that my pins set at 10 yard increments were too close and was hard to aim with. For that reason I went to 30/60 and now my 20/40/60 set up.
With my 30/60 set up. If the target or game was at 20 yards, I would aim low, if the target was at 40 I would aim high with my 30 pin. If the target was 50 I would aim low, if it was 70 I would aim high with my 60 pin.
I like my new 20/40/60 set up, because there is a little less guessing, and I am good up to 70 yards. Here in AZ I need some advantage over game. The most important part of archery hunting is confidence in your technique and ability.
I hope this helps.

Enrique

I have 20, 30, 40, and 50 and found out ( for whitetail) if its in between, 25, 35, so on, the two pins line up with the top and bottom of the torso for the same quick sighting...dead on kill zone...Boots

I cannot stress enough that the single pin with the adjustable thumblever to raise or lower it to the "EXACT" range is by a large margin the best way to go with a flat shooting bow. Multiple pins with a 300+ FPS arrow will cause the pins to be so close together that it blocks the target too much.

It's a simple matter to slide the lever up or down to the exact distance **to the yard** with a single pin lever sight. Range the target slide the pin, hold dead on without confusion. Simple and fool proof. You are thinking, I don't have time for the adjustment right? Leave it at 25 yards and you're good from point blank to 30 yards easy enough. For mor precision it takes all of 15 seconds to range and adjust. I think this is as good as it gets. Plus I feel much better with a pin coming up from the bottom then from the side.

JJ, good idea but I have a slow bow. Maybe with my next bow I can use your method. Rufous.

I use a single pin, set a 20 yards, with no adjustments - keeps it simple and only requires a few shots to know how
much to hold over , and I haven't picked the wrong pin in a while.

Given your set-up I would place your pins how ever it is easiest for you to estimate range. If you can better estimate in increments of 10 yards, do that. Keep in consideration how much above or below the point of aim the game you are hunting will allow, a couple of inches above and below can help to extend your pins a bit.

Personally I have a fast bow and have achieved my goal of one pin to 30 yds. I practice best at 50 yds and beyond, really makes you more aware of your form, so I have pins to 70 yds (5 pin sight - Spot Hogg right on with large guard)

Good shooting.

The last 3 seasons I've been using a Trophy Ridge Matrix with 3 pins. 25-35-45 yards

This year, my hunting bow will have the single pin Trophy Ridge Titan on it with a 4X lens. I will have it set for 25 yards and just aim a little high when animals are 35-40 yards away.

For 3-D shooting I would go with a 4-5 pin sight with 20-30-40-50-(60) yard pin setups.

I use 20-30-40.

I also figured out (though I forget the particular numbers) how to use the distance between pins as a rangefinder, just like you can do with a duplex reticle on a rifle scope, by bracketing the animal's body.
