Some of my Rugers really suck...just like Swampy Sez.... Take both of my ones chambered in 260....lightened the trigger, and my loads with a 100 grain ballistic tip at 3350 fps out of the muzzle, don't group worth a darn... I mean, 5 shots, and I end up with a 30 caliber hole on the target.... Lord knows where the other 4 shots went... I mean they weren't even on the paper!!!!!....

You need reread the OP. Rumor is that Ruger has finally sorted out their problems. They redesigned the rifle several times in the process. I'm out of money for testing them to see if I can find a good one.

You (swampboy710) don't want to shoot against my Rugers, tang safety or Mark IIs. You wouldn't meet the challenge anyway.

I bought my son a Ruger 77/tang safety in .243 for his 12th birthday. He still has it. The rifle will give you half dollar groups at 100 yards all day long.

I hear they make Fresca in flavors now...

I've owned both 22 250 and 220. I still have the 22 250. A few folks I know have had one or the other. They have all been good varmint rifles. I find the bull barrels great at the range, but really heavy for walking around rifles. But I am a groundhog and varmint hunter and what I need is different from what a pdog shooter would need and like. The paper difference between the two is more than the field difference, in my experience. I did not see a whole lot of difference in the trajectory of the two calibers and groundhogs never noticed any difference. Choosing between the two is a personal thing. They are both great cartridges. Bfly

Family has 5 tang safety Rugers, non that go outside of an inch for 3, all but one is well under that. 2- 243's, 257 UL, 25-06, and 270.
Hard to believe you can still pick up guns like this in the $400 range.

Hey guys, I'm looking at a Ruger 77 22-250 (tang safety), which I think is a 1977. I have heard some mixed reviews. Some people say they are fantastic, while others say the barrels are not that great. Does anyone here have one and what do they think about it. I own a M77 in .270 WIN my wife bought new for me in early 1978 - it still shoots MOA groups with 140 grain Hornady Interlock's and H4831sc. A hunting buddy has a similar vintage M77 in .22/250 (Varmint barrel version) that still shoots sub-MOA groups. How they will hold up over the long haul is anyone's guess, but so far so good.

Hey guys, I'm looking at a Ruger 77 22-250 (tang safety), which I think is a 1977. Ruger quality has improved.....but we are talking about a time when 1/2 of their production wasn't worth a $hit. Ruger has completely redesigned the M77 and hopefully got their barrel quality under control if rumor can be believed. You're still dealing with an action design that isn't really suitable for a varmint cartridge. Let's see... The only time I checked it on paper my heavy barrel MKII .22-250 dropped 4 shots into 0.5" at 200 yards. And you say the action "isn't really suitable for a varmint cartridge"??? And then, of course, there is my M77 .257 Roberts. Don't have a photo but with 115g TSX it shoots the centers out of clay pigeons at 200 yards with amazing frequency. Here's a target shot with 75g V-MAX: Some day maybe I'll have to get something more "suitable" for varmints...

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I owned a 6 MM Ruger RH 77 Tang safety mid 70,s till 2 years ago.
I shoot left handed factory round RP primer let go at edge, took 2 eye docs to get small piece of primer out of my right eye.
Should have been wearing eye protection, sold rifle, gas relief on RH rifle puts it right in line with your face shooting it LH. Bought a LH Ruger 7-08.
