1) Shot placement.

2) Matching a bullet to it's most effective speed, plus, paying attention to #1. (Barnes, or similar, gives a bit of leeway in #1, but doesn't bump it from first place.)

3) Cartridge/Caliber is largly trumped by the first two important decisions.

I didn't do that...

Though, the 165 SGK hit wasn't too far from that.

I have used a 35REM on a few deer and had great luck. 150 gr SP, 170 flat nose and probably any other weight. Slow enough to not blow up and big enought to do the organ damage needed. A 30-30 is also good for the same resons.

A 30/30 and some 170g bullets in what ever flavor you want to buy. Remington's always did the trick for me when I had a 30/30. I should have never sold that rifle. I was stupid in my youth. I will be getting one for this fall.
