I have a JC Higgins Model 50 that I picked that has had its trigger worked on by previous owner. It looks like it has been stoned and a set screw installed but i find its to light and when I engage the safety or disengage it the sear sometimes releases. I have backed out the set screw as much as possible but it still sometimes happens.

I want to go to a new trigger and wondering if anyone can recomend a trigger that they have used and will work in this model.

Timney

Junk the factory trigger and replace it with a Timney Sportsman. That's what I did with my JC Higgins Model 50, took about fifteen minutes to get the Timney installed and adjusted.

Another vote for the Timney. Every one I've owned, (6 or 7) has been a shooter. Very cool rifles.

Another thought, I have a model 50 and I replaced mine with a trigger from a Mark X Mauser. They have adjustment for weight of pull, sear engagement, and overtravel, the adjustment screws have lock nuts on them so they will not change ajustment.

I found them as goood, and as easily adjustable as the Timney Mauser trigger, and the best for last - they can be found for next to nothing, just run a Wanted ad in the classifieds. IIRC I paid $25 for mine with shipping included.

Yeah, if you can find one, they're great.

It's also pretty to remove the side-safety, if you want to use a wing-type safety on the bolt shroud. In fact, in that case the Mark X trigger gets even better!

When replacing the trigger on a Model 50, Does one have to replace the triggergard? On the three that I've had, they all had two piece triggers on them. The trigger iteself was pinned to the trigger gard.

Will the Timney fit in the same hole in the gard?

The trigger itself is a bit thicker than the factory trigger; a few minutes with a file was all it took. I had to remove just a little bit of material from the trigger guard to get the Timney to fit through; as well as remove some material from the stock for the Timney's housing. Again, just a few minutes with a file and chisel (on the wood). Well worth the time for the improvement over the factory trigger.

Timney sounds like the way to go. I have one last question do most people that have removed theirs have any problem using the factory wing safety ? or is it a better idea to get a new shroud and go with a Timney with side safety.

Your wing safety will/might need to be retimed to work correctly.

I just finished replacing the trigger on my Model 50 with a Bold. First time I ever used one. It fits the trigger guard with no alterations and works just as well for me as the Timney. Mine would fire sometimes when the safety was released with the factory two piece pinned trigger. Bad idea for Sears to use a two piece trigger back in the day.

The Bold is every bit as nice as a Timney. The radius of the trigger shoe fits the trigger guard much nicer too!



With a Timney the trigger sits further foward in the guard and the contour doesn't match as well..

I have not heard of Bold triggers before anyone else have any experience with them? Can they be adjusted? Who sells them and will they ship to Canada?

I like the Bold trigger better than Timney, and there are no flies on Timney. No idea how to get one these days (they may be available), as mine was on a Mauser I bought. Wish I had them on several more rifles with otherwise good triggers. They are adjustable.
