I am not a gunsmith!! Far from it. I do undertand my way around the 700 action a lil tho and I have a semi-custom gun that has a bolt release button issue. When depressed to take bolt out of gun, it stays depressed. Its easily pulled back down for the gun to fuction when bolt is replaced, but obviously this is not desireable. Any one have this issue or able to walk me thru a fix on this??

Thanks!
Sean

Remove the bolt stop and spring and give them and the slot a good, thorough cleaning. Inspect the bolt stop and it's slot for any burs and remove as needed. Make sure the front trigger pin is in far enough to clear the bolt stop. Make sure the bolt stop actuating lever on the trigger moves freely, is not gummed up or otherwise bent. The bolt stop pivots on the rear trigger pin so the pin needs to be free of any damage which could cause the bolt stop to drag as it pivots. Look carefully at the bolt stop spring and make sure it isn't bent out of position. Reassemble and try. Do not lube.

Take it out of the stock and check the spring, clean it, and check to see if it is bent.

From what I have seen, the bolt stop is a stamping. I have seen them with burrs on the off side. It is easy to knock off the burr and polish the sides smooth.

In addition to what others have said, on occasion I've seen the bolt stop bent. It's worth a look.

Hit it with some WD-40 and it will be fine.

WD-40 is for squeaky door hinges, keep it out of your rifle.

i wouldn't even use WD-40 on door hinges, and absolutely never near the trigger assembly. but that's swampy for ya.

Malm nailed it. i've had the stamped push button on the trigger assembly bent slightly so it would bind on the guide pins

Been using it for years with fantastic results. Developed by NASA. Don't believe the old wives tales of those who only wish to sell you expensive snake oil.

Do you have an aftermarket trigger or stock? When I've seen this, it's been a clearance problem between the trigger assembly and inside of the stock or trigger guard.

I'd be worried about your rifles Swampy, that is if I thought you actually owned any...

WD-40 has some viable uses, but firearms are not listed among them. You may indeed need a touch of lubricant, just do not use the WD.

WD-40 is a jack of all trades and a master of none. I would use 3&1 oil on my rifle before i would squirt WD-40 into my trigger. But that is just me, use whatever you like and if WD-40 is what you like then squirt it full.

I've seen this happen. The release lever on the side of the trigger assembly is likely rubbing against the side of the stock inletting. You may be able to see the scratch marks on the inside of the stock but if not put a light coat of lipstick on the side of the lever which runs along the trigger assembly and see if it leaves a mark on the inside of the stock when installed and pressed up/down a few times.

More words of dubious wisdom...

Keep WD-40 in the pole shed for rusty bolts on old equipment..

With 600 gr. wet/dry paper wetted with solvent on a flat surface like a benchtop, polish the bolt release plate (both sides), dab some Cold Blue on it and reinstall. I do use some Lock Eze on both sides of the plate, in the pin pivot hole and on the inside of the bolt release plate (where it slides along the trigger housing). The liquid carrier on the Lock Eze flashes off, leaving a dry graphite film behind.

For cold weather hunting stuff, I've been replacing the stock release spring with the Holland heavy duty one...works great!

Good shootin'. -Al

That's how I did it. Glad Al agrees.
