Thinking of another custom in 358 Win using a Douglas XX 20" stainless barrel. So what is the desired rate of twist for the 200 & 225gr bullets.

Thanks

Ken

The standard options are usually 1-12" and 1-16". I would go with the 1-12", whether it was for the 35 Reminton, or the .358 Norma.

If 1 in 14" was available, I'd opt for that. Its closer to optimum for the full range of .358 bullets up to the heaviest. I think 16" (which Remington uses in their .35 Whelen - most customs were historically faster twist) is pretty marginal for the longer 250gr and heavier bullets, particularly at .358 Win velocities. So if 1 in 14" is not available, go 1 in 12".

Ken,

As we both know, the 1~12" is the traditional twist for the .358... It is my belief that 1~12" is needed only for 250 gr. bullets. If one is NOT going to shoot 250's (And I really don't see a reason to...) then I believe one is better served by the 1~14". As you may know, (Cuz I've posted about it before...) I built a .356 Win with a 1~16" twist and was VERY disappointed with it. Just my two peso's worth...

+1 1:14 I have built two 358 Win, both with Pacnor 1:14 barrels. Both handle bullets from 180 to 250 without any problems and moa or better accuracy.

Thanks guys ! No need for a 250gr bullet in a 358 Win around here. Looks like the 14 twist gets the job done.

I have 2 358 win. rifles,,,one is the Ruger Hawkeye with a 1-12 twist and the other is a custom Savage M10 with a 1-10 twist,,,I have had luck reloading for both and got nice 1 1/4, & 1 1/2 groups with bullets in the 225gr class.....I also have a 35 Whelen (Remington 700) with a 1-16 twist,,that I can only get good groups if I load 180gr pills....so, I am thinking about rebarreling that with a Douglas BBL in 1-12. just my opinion.

Back when I had my custom 358 made I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions, both the barrel maker and others recommended a 1/12 twist, am very satisfied with the results.

I have a .358 Win with a 1/12 twist Douglas. The groups with 200 grain factory ammo are like a varmint rifle, all touching.

Have a .35 Whelen with a 1/14 Shilen that shoots great with factory 200's and 250's.

I'd be happy with either twist...35's seem to be easy...but a good barrel and chamber job probably nullify a lot of issues.

for 200's and 225's with no possibility of using 250's I'd also go 1 in 14".I went 1 in 12" on mine, but I love 250 RN's.

1 in 14" ideally. I'd settle for 1 in 12" though.
