D'oh.....22" not 20. sorry. I'm thinking of cutting it to 20" Man, Tom...a 20 would be perfect for that rifle. Matt

I like the Kimber's now. After a lifetime with M70's, 99's and some others the lightweight Kimbers please me. The Kimbers CRF, safety that works much better than a M70 and made in the USA have me sold. I have five of them now. A Kimber 84M Montana in the chambering of your choice would be ideal. http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles/model-84m

I have never owned one, but the BLR's seem to have a pretty good following. I see that the 20" .308 weighs 6 1/2#.

Kimber Montana or Model 70FWT in an Edge.
The Model 70 option while not an ultralight is close enough that only those lacking normal strength would have a problem.
Off the wall choice: Model 94 in .307Win for those who are comfortable with irons.

I used a 600 Rem for the platform and a McGowan 22" FW barrel I cut a little more off of and, with a Redfield 2 3/4 scope and Krylar stock weighs a little less than 6.0 and is a pleasure to carry and shoot with 150 and 165 gr bullets. The 180s? Not so nice. VERY accurate for the three shot groups I shoot. I am too old to carry more than one of anything so three shots is all that is needed. Aloha,Mark

I have kimber 84 that weighs aboul 6 lbs and shoots like a house afire. A little spendy she was though. If you like your ruger you might consider the ruger RL model. I have one in .257 Roberts and it is a fine rifle. The model 7 remington is hard to beat to, and if you like a lever the browning would be dandy. The .308 is a great round for your purpose. I have 3 and just missed out on a savage 99 i would have loved. A light weight .308 with a 20 or 22 inch barrel is a great all around rifle , might not be perfect for open country but it will do that to with a good load and some practice...tj3006

Does anyone have any familiarity with ultralight rifles that would cover deer, elk and sheep? I'm pliant with regard to caliber as well. I don't know if you are talking factory, or custom. But I have both. And, yes, they DO shoot. Factory--I'd look at Tikka T3 Lite, or HS Precision Lightweight Hunter. I'm one of the unlucky who had a very bad deal with Kimber, so I won't reccomend one. Custom--I have a lightweight 708 I built for a sheep hunt that shoots 1/2 moa out to 450, with a #1 Lilja barrel. If you do alot of research, you can find a lightweight rifle that fiils your needs.
I should have just bought a [bleep] T3...

I think this convo starts and stops with the Kimber Montana.

I think this convo starts and stops with the Kimber Montana. It definitely starts there, but I think a NULA at least deserves a mention (budget permitting, of course).
This is a shooting forum, there is no place here for logic.

I recently read that Savage is now making a real light bolt action rifle.I beleive they tested a 308 and it was 5lbs. 8 oz. I have a Kimber and love it but if this Savage would have been available at the time I bought I would have looked clossly at it Tim

Since you already run a Ruger and are used to it, you wouldn't go too far wrong running a Ruger Ultralight itself in 308. It'll get the job done without much trouble, not quite as light as some though.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Kimber Montana, but Savage does now have a Model 11 Lightweight Hunter which would be worth looking at.

Go to Browning's web site and check out the specs on their X-Bolt Micro Hunter. That rifle has a heck of a lot of great features.

The Gander Mtn. guide series is a great choice (a Rem 700 mtn rifle in a Ti stock, just not the Ti reciever or spiral cut bolt), I have a Leupold 2.5-8 with the B&C reticle. Shoots 168gr TTSX's under an inch and is a very easy carry. You may like Kimbers mo' better than Remingtons but if you don't this is a super choice.
