After reading so much about hunting rifle weights and the thread about scales to weigh rifles with I decided to use my Berkley fish scale as one gentlemen stated that he did. It turned out to be a real eye opener. I weighed three of my rifles. First off was my Winchester Model 670 30-06 22" barrel with a Ramline synthetic stock, Weaver steel rings, Simmons Whitetail Classic 3x9x40 scope, w/o sling and empty magazine. Weight 9lb 3oz. Hard for me to believe that I carried that rifle around the Bighorn Mountains mule deer hunting when I hear all the talk about the lightweight Kimber Montana's on these forums. I was a good bit younger that year and I must have been a pretty tough guy or I forgot that I was miserable! The next rifle I weighed was a Remington Model 700ADL 30-06 22" barrel with a Remington R-3 synthetic stock, Leupold aluminum rings, Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 scope, w/o sling and empty magazine. Weight 8lb 4oz. Last (and least) was my latest addition to the arsenal. Remington 700BDL 300SAUM 24" SS 24"barrel with a XCR synthetic stock, Leupold aluminum rings, Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40 scope, w/o sling and empty magazine. Weight 7lb 12oz. I don't know how accurate those fishing scales are but two things surprised me. How heavy that Winchester is, (and all along I thought the mild recoil was the stock fit and recoil pad) and how much lighter the 300SAUM was compared to the other two. I don't think that I'm going to weigh any more rifles. Seeing what they really weigh compared to some of you guys rifles here is too much of a shock.

Pretty crazy how that happens. Wait till you buy a chrony... I don't own one but was at the range one day and a guy I knew was there with his. I was shooting a .243 and my manuals said that I should get 2860. Chrony said 2854. I'm calling that good and not checking any more. LOL!

One of the first rifles I ran over a chrono when I got one was a 25-06, 100 grain bullet. I figured the thing was smoking them out like the manual said it would. Barely, and I mean barely, cracked 3000.
There is no way to coexist no matter how many bumper stickers there are on Subaru bumpers!

I bet now the OP is wishing he didn't weigh them. He will spend all hunting season thinking.. This rifle is sooo heavy, This rifle is sooo heavy.

People fret too much about rifle weight. If you're healthy enough to hunt, you should not require a flyweight rifle.

I don't "need" a light rifle, but I'm learning that I really "like" my lighter rifle!

Yeah, scales suck. All my guns are heavier than I thought.
I am currently trying to build a "lightweight" gun, and it is a tough experience, since I've weighed every part so far, and realized it adds up quick.

Balance is as important as weight, IMHO. Some guns just "feel" right. No reason to ruin that with a scale.

I've actually found most of mine scoped are 8.5lbs or so. All seem to handle nicely too.

Sportdog. I have an early Win. M70 in .243 and even though it's supposed to be a sporter, the damned thing need s wheels.
Here's a suggestion.See if you can find cast off stock from a Winchester M70 long action Featherweight, I sure seemed to make a difference in the apparent felt weight of the rifle. Besides, Ramline stocks, while stout are not the lightest weight around.

Balance is as important as weight, IMHO. Some guns just "feel" right. No reason to run that with a scale. I've actually found most of mine scoped are 8.5lbs or so. All seem to handle nicely too. i concurr!

I think it's all relative anyway, isn't it? I can tell which of my rifles is heavier without a scale(of course I only have two centerfires right now and the CZ 550 is defiantly heavier than the Savage 99e). As long as you can be comfortable carrying it around, who cares?

I only carry my rifles while hunting with the hope that I might actually get to shoot it. And I don't like the recoil of the very light rifles that seem to be so popular lately. I also like practicing with the rifles I actually hunt with and very light rifles are no fun for me. For me, I find the .270 Win. is comfortable for me at about 8.5# all ready to go. Anything generating more recoil than a .270, say an .06 or 7RM, then about 9# is OK by ME.

I don't waste my time weighing my rifles. I just shoot them and take home the game or money which ever the case may be  
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
