I've seen some awfully bad $1,500 1911's.
Twice as good? That depends on the criteria. I would definitely expect the $3,000 pistol to last at least twice as long. I would also expect the pistol be more accurate and be set-up just like I want.
If the mechanical precision of the pistol doesn't provide value to the shooter then it might not be worth it.

I have shot recent Wilson Combat .45's and they are not only incredibly accurate but the company is continually working on new ergonomics and improvements. Bill Wilson may not make every one personally, but he is actively involved in the changes. They will also last for tens of thousands of rounds of rapid fire, with nary a hiccup. That sort of gun doesn't come for $1000.

I see Wilson is now offering ammunition also. One of their loads is a 200-grain Speer Gold Dot at 950-fps from a 4" barrel. That should leave a mark.

It like guys who wear Rolex versus Timex, both keep time just fine, but some people prefer fancy. I have a Rolex and I have a timex, I have colts and kimbers and I have a Les Baer. they all get used. A Timex would be more like a Glock in that comparison.
