This Geezer drew a Dall's Sheep tag and I need a new tent [see want ads].....I dug my old one out of the shed and it's in bad shape....gave it to the neighbor kids to play with....so, If you have a high quality, high country tent for sale or know of a great sale, please advise..

Thanks

Vern

Not very good unless you are lucky. I put in for sheep tags for 13 years before I drew my first one in 09, the same as Verns and I drew it again this year. I've been putting my wife in for sheep tags for about 5 years now and she has yet to draw any tag, let alone sheep.

Usually in the 1% - 3% range depending the tag.

OTC some areas, good nonresident odds some areas, lousy odds elsewhere.

As for tents, depends on your personality. Kinda. Do you absolutely have to put your tent in a windswept high saddle in stormy weather? Then, get a solid tiny 4-season heavy sucker. Are you willing to retreat a bit in inclement weather and find a sheltered spot? Save some serious pounds and run a tipi or floorless. Do you see risk in the second plan? So do I, but I do it anyway.

I'm gonna bump this thread back to the top as I'm in the same boat as well this year.

Any advice on Hilleberg tents?

I've got an Akto and its a great tent. Only really been on one solid sheep hunt but that was a backpack trip for 7 days and it seriously worked amazing. Decent weight, good room for 1, nice vestibule to pull your back and boots inside each night to keep them dry, and overall good design.

Ah hahahahah, I've been on two guided sheep hunts, and I don't really remember what tent the guide had......I was so exhausted each day that I was asleep before the tent was up. The nmero uno detail for me was BOOTS!
I'm kind of a gear collector, and if I was an Alaskan setting out solo backpack for sheep, I think, having owned or used every possible shelter type, I think I'd use a Hilleberg Allak or Jannu. They go up so easy, stay dry in the rain, good weight, and if conditions are humid, that Allak has superb ventilation.

Vern, take a look at the Golite SL3 and 5. Anyone use the Golite Eden or Arcadia?

Don't know if you have found what you are looking for yet?

But I have a GoLite Valhalla 2+ that I am going to be selling. It is a 2+ person tent that is 4 season and weighs a legitimate 5 lbs. for complete set up in the sack with everything needed. The site has it as being 5 lb. 2 oz., and mine weighs right at 5 even for all of it. It has 2 doors and 2 good size vestibules. It has a very generous rectangle shaped inside floor space.

Only selling mine because I am making changes to my shelter choices; my tent has only been gently used a few times and is in excellent condition. I will sell it for a very reasonable price. Let me know if you are interested.

Here is a link to to site:

i guide sheep hunters and goat hunters as well here in alaska.
none of my one man sheep hunt tents cost more than 200 dollars.
i've got mt hardware meridian 1 and another MThardware that i cant' remember the name of and a kelty lightyear or something i think. all of them come right in at 3lb and light change depending on how many stakes i bring all have lasted more than 4 or 5 seasons, never had a failure of any sort, water proof, wind proof, and client proof! i love the hilly tents but the weight and cost hold me back when what i've been using has worked so well.
On a side note if i do get in a jam and can't get all my gear out in one trip, my tent don't cost so much that i'll cry at night if i have to leave it behind for whatever odd reason comes up.
