Steve, that is a nice one. Is that a 1899/99 transition lightweight by any chance?
Has the same lines as one I just sold recently.

also special wood like Romac's birdseye maple stock. Yes Roger has a Beauty of a rifle. Got One Yesterday, Won't be Here for week or so, Not at all as Nice as Roger's But a 1st for Me. Maple stocks can be neat but you don't think that one is factory do you? I looked that gun over pretty carefully and it seemed to have quite a few discrepancies from a factory stock... some of the other pictures showed it more... there could be room for it to have once been factory and then someone just heavily sanded away the factory shape. It would be a real shame if it was once a factory gun for someone sure "ruined" a rare factory gun if so!! Should make a neat project anyway. What have you got planned for it Steve? Going do any engraving? Just a reblue? Serial would have made it an early 99F. Not quite what I would call transition though, as I recall it was around 245,xxx Cheers

I tried to think of which 5 out of my collection I would keep if I could only have 5, couldn't figure it out That being said I guess I like special order, limited production, high condition rifles. Personal favourites are the 1899C's and 99H barrel bands. I do like the prewar R/RS's and the prewar EG's. Regardless of the bad wrap us "old guys" give the post mils if I was young and collecting on a limited budget I would be trying to find as many cheap really high conditioned post mils to sit on for a bit. They would have to be high condition and priced right, but it would be a good start. Ask Jed how he made out picking up 99F's in high condition when the collectors were all looking for pre WWII rifles! Condition and price! JMTCW Blair

Any vintage rifle that is mint in the original box. The older the better of course. Can you imagine how "collectable" a minty M1895 in the original box - with original hand tag and paperwork would be? Oh, and it is the SRC variation

Oh, and it is the SRC variation probably was in an original CRATE back then don't you think? Would be nuts if something like that existed. I did happen to see a NIB 99C in 308 sell recently for under $1000. I imagine that would have been a reasonable investment piece... not enough so to attract me...

On the subject of NIB what is the earliest 1899/99 box anyone has seen? I've seen wood crates of 1895 and 1894 Winchesters but don't remember a Savage box older than the 30's (cardboard/green label).

The gun had been out of the box several times as well.

Was a 1920's 99G advertised by the auctioneer as NIB that went up on auction a few years ago in NH, never saw a picture of it though.
Oldest box I remember seeing except for the cased sets was from the 30's.
